OT Suckered in by a pair of big chartreuse eyes

We have three cats. We do not need another one. We kept telling ourselves that all morning when we went round door to door knocking to see who owned and was missing a black kitten.

We got a ring at our bell ourselves early this morning. A nice old lady in a big straw hat was there to tell us that "our" black kitten was curled up on the tire of the van and we should be careful of it if we were to go anywhere. It took until lunch to realize that the only way she would have known it was there is if she had put it there. By that time the whole neighborhood was hiding from us. We had toted the kitten all over making inquiries, and even though we knew most of them were at home, a very great many people hid instead of answering the door. I reckon straw hat lady had already made the rounds trying to get rid of the kitten. So DH plunked the kitten on me, the kitten does the nose touch and soulfull stare thing, and DH asks, "So do we keep it or call animal control?" Maaaaan, multiple sucker punch!"

So I asked it its name and it said, "Rah-owp-ooomna" and I said "Rasputina it is!" kiri has decided it is a boy and is holding out for another name. We'll see if anything drops and go from there... Meantime I am keeping a sharp eye for a little old lady wearing a big straw hat with humongous silk roses on it.

Yes, free kittens are mighty expensive, but oh, so worth it... Congratulations on your newest 'child'.

Greetings to your new fur baby from my tribe. Rasputin joined me in much the same way - soulful eyes and a plaintive cry for food.

I tell you - there is a cat telegraph system around here that advises when there is a vacancy or a "soft touch" in the neighbourhod!

You mean the nice old lady in the big straw hat has chartreuse eyes, right? I think she must have known you were a soft touch & lucky Rasputin to have found a nice new home with Mr. & Mrs. Sucker. You might have to take the nice old lady with the big straw hat and the chartreuse eyes to the shelter though, if she turns up with anymore kitties!

That's how all my kitties arrived, because I was a soft touch and people knew it. [sigh!]

And they are a joy in the house!

OK -- boy kitties have a colon : under the tail and little girl kitties have a semi-colon ; -- the difference really is obvious so just take a look. Little boys usually have the beginnings of testicles so there is a little "bump" under that colon. Either way, the Rasputin or Rasputina name will work. You do know that babies pick us don't you? The Kitty Gods were smiling on you and the kitty when that little old lady knocked on your door :-)! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

The little guy (I think) takes great offense at have his intimate areas prodded at. Until she posted I didn't even recall that Cheryl's new baby is called Rasputin, I was thinking of Rasputina the band. DH says if we call the poor boy that he will eventually end up being named poutine or some like, so the whole house is waiting for the kitty-boy to decide on a new name for himself. He has had a flea bath (he really _really_ needed it). He screamed so I am sure he thought we were killing him. The other cats seemed to think so too. They all gathered round the bathroom door stareing at it with big eyes. Every time the door opened Jiji would try to dash in, I suppose to see if a rescue needed to be thought of. He has become totally attached to kiri. If she leaves the room he goes looking until he finds her. Boy does this little guy talk a lot. Every time he does anything he has to announce it. He even talks while he is eating.

My new baby is happy to answer to Raz if that is any help.

Or you could call him Putz if it suits lol

Congrats on the new QI, Nightmist! I, too, have had them appear out of the blue, but never had them delivered by a nice little old lady in a big straw hate.............

Oh dear...it sounds like fate meant for Rasputina to be yours. With the nose touch, you didn't have a chance!

That little girl/guy (?) must look almost exactly like my cat, Charley. Charley is almost three now. I got him from a shelter. Little tiny thing with a huge purr.

Get used to his chattiness. My black kitty even tells me when he's going to do something bad like bat a lampshade. Someone who had been a veterinary assistant once told me there is often some Siamese hiding underneath that black fur.

I have heard that about black cats before. Mr. Bear (RIP) was an honest to gosh black siamese. Purebred siamese who just came out black, both his mama and papa were chocolate points. Kiri got him for free. The breeder wasn't even going to try to get rid of him because he was a blot on their cattary's escutcheon. He would have just been quietly eliminated, but she was a friend of the family, not catshow people, so she got to take him so long as she never said where she got him from. He was solid black for about his first five years. After that he started getting white streaks, but the hairs were white on top and black on the bottom (ticked). By the time he was seven he was getting full siamese points in the winter, only white on black, and shedding them out every spring. Snazzy looking cat! Some people wept when they found out he was fixed.

I would guess that lil'bit here is between 8 and 10 weeks old. he is naught but a scrap of fur with huge ears, long legs, and big feet. His tail isn't any longer than my index finger, so I would guess closer to 8 weeks than 10. He seems to be in the midst of that stretching out stage kittens go through.

Jiji-chan finds him fascinating, Thorncat mostly ignores him, and Stripey is righteously PO'd. Stripey thinks she should be the only cat in the world, and finds the bringing of other cats into the house extremely offensive.

Very interesting about Mr. Bear! So glad Kiri got to take him! I've never heard of a black cat coming from two Siamese parents, nor one that showed it's Siamese origins in later years and only part of the time. What a very cool kitty. :-)

I love your description of your cat family. Stripey obviously knows she was meant to be queen! The as yet unnamed new addition (I guess he hasn't told you his name yet?) sounds exactly like Charley when I got him. The shelter people estimated his age at 8 weeks, so I think you're right on the money there.

Have you got pics of your kitties up?

Nope, he has not yet told us his name.

I had some pics of Jiji up, and some sewing machine pics as well. I was just getting into the swing of it and getting pics posted, when my image account was abruptly cancelled. Apparently since I posted the link to the pics of Jiji-chan to an adult oriented group I am a regular on, they had decided I was a pornographer without so much as looking at my account. In the very brief time between when I got the account and when they canceled it, they had changed their TOS to say no adult content. Not that I had any, but there you go. One of many reasons I am looking for an image posting account that does not restrict one to G rated content. I think I may have to wait til I can afford a paid server for a webpage.

New lil'guy is _totally_ a QI by the way. Either that or he was a silkworm in a previous life. I have my workroom all draped in wide width yardage right now, 10-15 yard lengths, as I press and mark for cutting for those circles I am doing. I am marking the longer lengths so as to make the most efficient use of the fabric and reduce seams in the edge binding. So lil'guy thinks this is the most marvelous kitten playground in the world. I usually have a pile of unpressed silk piled on clean newsprint on the floor on one end of the ironing board, and he really likes to make running leaps to end up in the middle of it and roll around and wrap himself up. I chase him off of the silk and he goes and tunnels under the 10 foot wide canvas with one of his fur mousies (oh! we love our mousies!). I am having the very devil of a time keeping him out of the fabric! I had to drape the silk for the 9 foot circles from the rafters because he kept playing slip and slide with it (do a running leap, land on the end, slide along the floor on it) Fixing the door on the room has now increased in importance by monumental proprtions!

Last night we discovered his name is Spike.

I suppose that is what happens when you allow young impressionable kittens to watch Buffy DVDs.

Spike! No doubt it fits that onery boy to a tee. :-) Nothing like draped fabric to give a cat a perfect place to play and pounce. Even though Charley is almost 3, he surprised me from underneath a quilt I had draped over a table the other day. I was doing some handwork and he pounced my feet from beneath it. I didn't even know he was in the room. About scared the you know what out of me. ;-)

Sorry to hear you lost your web pics. I imagine they have a computer generated program that scans accounts for items they think are unacceptable. No individual attention at all.

Thanks for sharing your Spike stories. Kittens are so adorable, so I love to hear about their antics. Although I must admit to feeling a bit of relief that Charley is no longer a kitten. ;-)

Happy Independence Day!
