OT tour across the USA

I have a vague recollection that someone on here did this last year, an east to west through the northern states.

We've been musing about doing something like this, maybe this summer, but more likely it's something we need to plan and save up holiday time for.

I have a vague notion that the trip was planned by the persons father or father in law.

Our intended time would be July/August, due to school, so considerations of temperature and the things we most want to see mean that vaguely following the I-90 corridor is what we want to do. If it goes well, I could imagine we'll be wanting to do other areas in future.

Anyway, to whoever it was, I'd really value any input you can give!

To everyone else, I'd love to hear suggests of what you think is a must see, over the years I've heard so many things that piqued my interest, but weren't sufficiently big or well known that I can recall details. My very beginning list is below.

Start in Boston, possibly start with a couple of days their before picking up an RV - this is subject to change, as I get more detail I may decide it's more feasible to start closer to the Great Lakes.

Niagara falls and other things to do with the Great Lakes - I've always wanted to see them, but I don't really know any specific things to see or do.

Maybe swing north around Lake Michigan - or are there any car ferries across it.

I have a vague notion about seeing Milwaukee, but I'm not sure why.

See some of the "Little House on the Praire" locations in Wisconsin.

Then it's a bit of a blank between there and Mount Rushmore.

Yellowstone national park, definitely Old Faithful.

Possible end it their and drive home (Seattle), as eastern Washington and northern Idaho (if there is anything to see there...) could be a separate shorter trip from home.

Thanks Anne

If you're driving across South Dakota on I90, the Corn Palace at Mitchell is only about a mile or so off the interstate and may be a good break. It's a one of a kind (thank goodness)

Rochester, MN, home of the Mayo Clinic, is about 10 or 15 miles north of the interstate. It's where I live. We have 2 nice quilt shops in the city. There are also a couple quilt shops south of the interstate within

5 or 10 miles. The Minnesota Quilt Show will be in Rochester June 26-28 this year.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are about 80 miles north of I90. Among other things there, you'll find the Mall of America, a nice zoo, and a nice science museum.

I90 crosses the Mississippi River near LaCrosse, WI. The National Eagle Center at Wabasha, MN, is an interesting place. Wabasha is about 70 miles north of LaCrosse.

Duluth, MN, on Lake Superior, is one of our favorite vacation spots, but is about 225 miles north of Rochester.

I was going to suggest the Corn Palace in Mitchell, but couldn't remember the name of the town. Might also want to check out the Wall Drug Store in Wall, S.D. If you go through off-interstate Montana, the general store in Judith Gap is great for milk shakes.

I'd suggest you join AAA (American Automobile Association) at an office near you. For about $75 a year you get great trip planning benefits, complete with tour books, maps and custom trip plans. It will also provide some free emergency services. They've jumped my battery and changed my tire. Well worth the fee, IMO but I must say NAYY. PAT in VA/USA

I'm originally from Erie, PA.(half way between Buffalo, NY and Cleveland, OH) There's a great State Park there called Presque Isle....about 7 miles of sandy beaches, a walking/skating/biking path that runs about 14 miles, sand volleyball, boat rentals, etc. Also, there's a new Environmental Center near the entrance to the park, and an Amusement Park/ Water Park. The Amusement park is currently building a new roller coaster which will cross the 4-lane entrance to the park!! Erie now has a brand new "Slots Parlor". There are always activities during the summer along the bay front and the Lake front. Might be worth a stop!
