OT we have chickens

I know this is horribly off topic, but we've just got 2 hens and they've already started laying eggs and we're all very excited about it so I just wanted to share. You can see some pictures at my blog (the link is in my .sig)

We now return to your usual programming.

I understand your excitement- we have 4 laying hens (Buff Orpingtons) and a gorgeous HUGE red rooster. Fred just started getting mean (testosterone, I assume!) and the hubby is a bit leery of catching him to trim his wing feathers so he can't fly out of the pen. I think Fred is so enamored with his "girls" that he wouldn't even think of trying to get out. He has BIG nasty spurs now that he's fully matured. Aren't fresh eggs just yummy!

I like their house. I also have two pullets. One reddish brown and one black. just like yours. They are a little young yet to lay eggs, but we are patient. How funny that together we would have two pairs.

My late MIL swore that buff orpington chickens were the best eating chicken ever. And she should have known after spending her entire life on a ranch. I realize that you probably will not sacrifice one of yours for the table, but just in case you do. I wanted you to know that.

What a fun henhouse, Mel! Hmm...I think those henhouses you first showed your DH really *were* old iMacs! ;)

YAY!!! Chickens should be somehow made to be on topic. I know, I will say that I have chicken fabric I'd like to trade - it has Rhode Island Red hens on it.

We have chickens and guineas. They've all had babies this spring and the guineas are laying again. One hen is setting and her eggs should hatch next week. :)

Leslie! I had no idea that Buff Orpington was a breed of chicken. That was the name we gave the pretend snob when my sisters and I played paper dolls. A hundred years ago or more. My, my. We just never know what will appear here. Thank you. Polly

LOL..... my son showed chickens in 4-H fairs and he always wanted a buff orpington but couldn't find a local breeder selling chicks. The books listed them among the best for egg production and meat birds.

Mel - My neighbor across the street has some chickens and some ducks and he gives me eggs every couple of weeks. He has a black and white chicken... I haven't a clue what she's called.... but she looks like she's wearing a hat. You can barely see her eyes - she's just adorable. He lets them all run loose in his yard all day long, and they eat the abundance of slugs we seem to have in the PNW. And their eggs are good!!! Enjoy!

I had no idea so many quilters kept chickens. It's fun when you find people who share your passions, and I am becoming quite passionate about my girls.

You don't even know how terribly jealous I am!!! I"m desperate for chickens (and a mini donkey, but I'd settle for any chickens!) and home grown tomatoes! :o( But I'm very happy for you!!! :o)

Would love to see pics of your Buff Orpingtons. Would they qualify as QI's? LOL

Nice chickens! I've always wanted chickens. I don't know if my town/village would allow me to have a few. Fresh eggs sound so wonderful.

Carole- you'd cringe/laugh at the sad condition my poor hens are in! Fred, the rooster, is extremely amorous and he keeps their poor backs pucked bald by trying to use their back feathers to "hold on". The gals tolerate them, but I'm sure they'd just as soon lay their eggs without his "assistance". We acquired the chickens almost two years ago- the chickens and their little hen house were our wedding gift to each other! This link is a hatchery near us and where our hens came from-

I'm thinking any chicken would be a terribly "messy" QI- not even going to think about it! LOL

Once met a hen who thought she was a lapdog. We were staying in a little guesthouse out in the country, near a farm. The hen came over every morning, liked to be picked up and petted. And she never seemed to poop on anybody, or on the furniture. Roberta in D

Me too! I'd love to have a few chickens. I used to hand carry one of mine around and aim her at beetles and slugs! What a weapon, lol! Mel, your hen house and chickens are adorable! But at least I have homegrown tomatoes. :D BLTs for dinner last night. chipper

Ok, I read this newsgroup, alternating with the World of Warcraft ng, doing all my reading at once. Rarely do I get confused over which one I am reading, but this one really made me laugh...

My WoW character just got a chicken as a pet (and now all the kids want them). The chickens don't do anything but follow the character around (unlike other animals which will fight in the game along with their owner), so they can't take Damage (get hurt) or recieve Buffs (protective spells/shields).

I read Carole's post, and was trying to figure out how she got a Buff on her Chicken, and which city did QI stand for.... um. wait. *NOT* WoW, but quilting! (ok, no off-topic stuff there, but normal for here)

Time to quit reading and go Buff my Rogue and grind some Defias in WF!
