Mother nature will dole out whiter Christmas than most bargained for

COEUR d'ALENE -- The daunting 52-hour snowstorm that started 5:30 a.m. Wednesday and persisted through 9:30 a.m. Friday left a total of 37.3 inches in Coeur d'Alene.

"It's an all-time record storm," said climatologist Cliff Harris, adding that it's the biggest blizzard on record stretching back to 1895, beating the city's snowfall record of 24.4 inches in 1922.

cool site, Kate, glad they show the rest of the world as well. i cant find the local radar for nz tho, so no animation. that would be cool as we get our weather coming from so many different directions can be tricky work'n out what is coming. usually the smell in the air helps tho, lol. i'll check out the site more when i've more time. i see it is now the longest day of the year. ours is 14hrs 2 minutes. our humidity is really low today, only 60%, wow. temp shows as 19C or 67F, very comfy with a wee breeze. last laundry before xmas is on the line and will get dry today. ok, might end up with one more load before wed. tho showers/rain is forecast til thursday when it should be fine and sunny, albeit prob'ly rather high humidity after three days of showers/rain to dry up, lol. typical xmas day then. i'll be work'n for sure this week, tho usual load is down on previous yrs. i think there are few corporate xmas baskets going out this year, fine by me. we never got one ourselves, just threw'm at other folks. merry merry, happy happy, j.

Right now in my part of NJ we are getting sleet and freezing rain which is a bummer since today was a long awaiting quilting afternoon with 3 of my quilting buddies. They all live with a few miles of each other but I live

45 minutes away so I will have a treacherous ride if I decide to go. I was looking forward to this afternoon since I am trying to get the binding done on my DHs surprise christmas quilt. The five quilts for his siblings can be worked on out in the open but he doesn't know he is getting his quilt for christmas. His has different border and backing fabrics so he will know it's not one of the other five so I need to work on his covertly.

Of course, they are predicting lots of black ice for tomorrow which should make for an interesting ride to work. I travel an hour each way. We had snow on friday which looked pretty coming down but I hate driving in the stuff. I travel a very busy turnpike which I have to share with some not so competent drivers!

I guess compared with a 52-hour snowstorm, I have no room to complain! I'm going to try to find some pictures of that area to see what that amount of snow looks like!

I hope everyone has safe travels this holiday season!

Sounds like much of the country has nasty weather.

Criminy, there is snow still on the ground here. At 7 am it is 27 out. The snow is an unusual thing here. We get a bit of snow and have a great view of it on the mountains but this is ridiculous. Nearly a foot. DD was trying to figure out why anyone would live where this is a typical occurrence. We are more than a bit spoiled! Hope everyone is staying warm and safe. TAria

We've had almost 30 inches of snow so far this season, about double the normal amount. Eighteen inches still on the ground, including 7" that fell yesterday. I'd much rather have snow than sleet and freezing rain. Today it's cold -- 7 degrees F below zero -- and very windy. The wind chill is approaching a point that is the same whether Fahrenheit or Celsius: -40 degrees. I'm staying inside :) Yesterday I finished pajamas for the grandkids. Today I'll be working on a set of sheets for a toddler bed and a tote bag for one of the grandkids.

Now, for us, the question is whether we will get it as snow or rain? Oh boy, though, that's cccccold. . In message , Julia in MN writes

We still have some snow on the ground here, too, but it's mainly in the shady areas. The mountains are gorgeous, all coated in white -- and that's really as close as I like it to get. They're predicting more precipitation on Wednesday, so we *may* have a white Christmas. This is so unusual for this area!

I can't really sew much right now, since my machine is packed up until my new cabinet arrives (tomorrow!). I'd hoped to get to play around with it a little, but DH is coming home tomorrow, a day early, with MIL. Once she arrives, all sewing will continue to be at a standstill, and Christmas "entertaining" will commence.
