OT= X-News. Does anyone use X-News?

if so, can someone help. I don't know where i can change the amount of time messages are held. For example, I can't always read ever message at each time I read the group. So I leave some for later. But, if I wait "too long" (I don't know how long too long it) I end up with an error "That message is no longer available". I hope that makes sense. Does anyone know how I can change this setting?

Thank you! Emilia

Hi Emilia,

You can only make a change for your own messages, not for others. That is, you can set your newsreader to have your posts removed after a period of time, or use the default setting which means they are archived forever. However you can't adjust it for someone else's posts if the original poster has their messages set to be removed. HOpe this makes sense!

"News" is a two part issue. First, there is a news *server* that contains most or all of the newsgroups on Usenet. Often your ISP has a news server as a convenience to its users. Other times you can subscribe to a separate news server. Second, is the news *reader* program on your own computer. From what I can tell, X-News is a news reader program, no?

Length of time messages stay "on" is usually a setting that is put on the news server itself and not something you can change. Depending on the amount of storage they have and the number of newsgroups they serve, they may not be able to keep messages more than a few days or weeks. They should have a "help" or "FAQ" section where you can find out what their defaults are. If they default to a time too short for you, you could switch to another news server.

That said, there may also be a setting on the news reader and if there is, there should be a "help" or perhaps "tools", "options" or "preferences" menu you can poke around in.

Individual.net(www.individual.net) is the news *server* I use (it does cost a little bit each year). The news *reader* I use is Mozilla Thunderbird. HTH

Hi, Yes, it makes sense. If the message is no longer available on Xnews I go to google to read the thread. But I'm not sure this is my question: Let me try again...

When Xnews downloads messages (to my computer I assume) it only keeps them available for x amount of time (which I think is bearly a week) when I go to read them after this x amount of time the message reads "message not available. do you want to read message on google?" or some such thing....

So my questions: (hopefully more clearly written :o) are: Is it possible to keep messages on my computer on XNews longer than this x amount of time, so that I don't have to read them all right away? I'd like to keep them on my computer so I don't have to go to Google Groups archive. Perhaps I have to download the whole message & not just the headers? How do I check those settings if that's the case? Or how do I change the settings to not purge the messages after x amount of time?

I hope that makes more sense....

regards, Emilia

Don't use X-News, don't like it. But maybe what you need is a better news server. I use SuperNews @ about $20/month but if you don't download binary files (I do), you can get a much cheaper rate. There are quite a few premium servers around, I just happen to like this one as they are super reliable and the tech help is both free and high quality, and also the posts stay up nearly forever (there are 90,918 older messages that I have not downloaded). TeraNews has a free subscription that might be just what you need for simply reading newsgroups. HTH

You need to turn storage on.

Here is the manual for your reader:

formatting link
"If you do not have storage on, when you do a catchup, the next time, you will not see the headers you've retrieved."

Aha! I kept looking for something that said "keep messages for x days"! but that has nothing to do with it!

Thank you!

Found & fixed! In fact when I change the storage option, that is when i find the "purge after x days" thing. These are the little niggly problems you have when you move computers. Your setting are different & you can't remember how to fix them Thanks again! & again! Emilia
