Patriot's Day

I am heading off in a few minutes to a treat-to-me quilt retreat, in Buellton with my favorite quilt shop. Will be sewing red-white-blue today.

On the road, I will be recalling the day 8 years ago, of the attacks from terrorists. That day was a day off for me from my job with the Sheriff's Dept, and I was sewing/quilting like I will be today.

It wasn't until three days later I learned my twin brother had not been at a meeting he was scheduled to attend at the Pentagon on 9/11. He had gone the day before instead.

I remember turning to rctq on that day for news and updates. The DH of one of us was a NYC-area traffic controller, who experienced seeing those radar blips headed for the towers, first hand. Another rctq'er posted photos of the towers on fire, taken from her house across the water. Another...Lauren Bartl or something like that?...was in the towers when the first plane hit. Left the meeting half set-up and started down the stairs...and lived to write about it later. When I think of 9-11 I think of her descriptions of the firefighters she passed on the way up, as she was on her way down.

My boss at the time was stranded in Florida when all the flights were cancelled, and ended up renting a car to get home. He lost about a dozen friends at the Pentagon that day. He also essentially lost his business as the DoD started paying for the war on terror and cut the project we'd been working on, although that didn't manifest itself till months later.
