Postage Stamp Charm Swap.....

Hello fellow RCTQers,

I have been collecting 1 1/2? charms for some time now but still only have maybe 600 or 800. I wondered if there would be any interest in a 1 1/2? charm swap? We could make up little bundles of 20 or 25 different fabrics and swap those? I just want to gauge the interest in this.....

Hi Jo,

You've piqued my interest. I enjoy fabric swaps. May I ask what one might make with such small pieces?

You can either save them up until you have several thousand and make a quilt-sized postage stamp quilt with nothing but those tiny pieces. Or you could use some to make the middle of a quilt such as Boston Commons, which has little squares on point, but the edges are all of one color, usually white or muslin. Once you start collecting, it's easy to just keep going...... I'm actually up to 3,000 now. I just did the math and for a 90 x 90 inch quilt I'll need 8,100. Well, someday.....

I'd rather send you a bundle of charms (why not 36, enough for a 6.5" square?) and you could send me, say, a 7" square. Or some 4.5", or whatever. Just finished a mini split 9-patch made of 432 1.5" HST squares. Enough already! Roberta in D

Jo,

Not interested in a swap...but, are each of your fabrics different from each other or do you have duplicates? I would be more than happy to send you some scraps that you could cut down to size, but just wanted to know if you are duplicating or not! If not, I'll just start cutting 1 1/2" squares every time I touch a piece of fabric and collect them all to ship off to you!

I agree with Danielle. Since I will be mailing you a block from the group swap, I will just add some scraps if that will work for you.

I have some 1 1/2 strips that I'd gladly donate, but charms and strips that small are way too fiddly for my patience. Let me know!

Thought I was the only one crazy enough to work with this size piece. I don't have time for an organized swap but will reach into my pile and send you a handful. I assume when you say "charm" that you want every piece different. Any fabric style? Is your address still the same?

A store in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin displays a quilt with 1 1/2" finished Nine Patch blocks. The owner refers to it as her Birthday Quilt. She saw an antique quilt that size and kept talking about it so much that her friends made it for her birthday gift. I started the quilt for my 60th birthday. Might have it finished for my 65th birthday. My fabrics were all 1800's repros with muslin. Originally I was planning that every block be different fabric but have given up on that silly idea. When working with 1800's fabrics I cut all scraps into 1" strips pair them with muslin and drop them in the "Birthday" box

Many of Jo Morton's patterns use 1 1/2" and smaller pieces. Hope you like Civil War fabrics.

In the spirit of the advice you have just given others, "all fabric gratefully accepted here", to be vetted by two inexperience but willing QIs. They were oh so helpful today as well.

Okay Jo, count me in. I am intrigued! You're in the directory, right?

A postage stamp quilt is one thing on my lifetime "to do" list (the other a Grandmother's flower garden).

I would gladly join in.

Do you have a pic of that quilt? I cannot even imagine the patience it took. I think it would be a gorgeous thing, but beyond my capabilities and patience. Four hundred thirty two of those suckers! Wow.

I might be interested. Not saying I would make anything for awhile, but I could start collecting them now!

Sounds like one of those "long term" projects. Both the collecting and then the sewing!

Let me know how you want to go about this.

I would enjoy this very much. Having already made one quilt with postage stamps, I'd like to do another someday. Please let me know the details.
