quilt class end

The last remaining student from my quilt class is nearly finished with her quilt top - just has the border to go. However, she is hoping to have it finished by this coming Monday so that she can show her coworkers. It "needs" to be finished by Labor Day weekend so that she can give it to the children/grandchild that she made it for.

So....she wanted to come over Wednesday night, but we are taking the tour of the hospital at 7:30, so there is no way that sewing will happen. Instead, I will be piecing the borders together and then adding them to the rest of the quilt top. I will also be getting the batting and backing ready for her - she'll probably be over thursday or friday.

So, here's the problem. I think she feels bad that she wasn't able to do all of this on her own. However, I also think she is forgetting that her DH has been extremely sick over the past few months, having to miss quite a bit of work and spedning that time visiting diferent doctors and being out on and taken off lots of different medications. Was I wrong to offer to help her with some machine sewing to get it ready by her own self-imposed deadline????

To make it easier and to meet her deadline, she has decided that she want to go ahead and tie the quilt, which is what we will be doing whichever night she can come over.

Anyway, the question is, do you think it will be okay if the quilt is mostly hand stitched, with machine stitched borders, and then tied???????????

Larisa, totally off beat today since DS woke up wanting the hall light on and DH ended up sleeping on the floor of DSs room.....nobody got any sleep last night

Have the quilt police been knocking at your door??? The quilt can be done any way she wants! If the recipients reject it because it has both hand and machine stitching and is tied, they certainly never need to get another quilt from her.

LOL..you know, I had actually forgotten about the quilt police (I know, shame on me). I was just voicing her concerns. Basically she is afraid that it won't look "right", but she wants it to hold up for a while and be fairly durable...which is why she agreed to the machine sewing. Another thing is that she is afraid that her DH will say, "I told you so!" He said that she should get her own sewing machine - she doesn't do ANY sewing, and so doesn't see any need for it.

Thanks all for the advice!!

It's very nice of you to finish it for her but isn't the point of a class is for the student to DO IT THEMSELVES? Nothing NEEDS to be finished by a certain date just 'cause you want it to be so. If she wants it all hand stitched and hand tied she should do it herself. Machine stitched borders would certainly make it easier on you, regardless. It is one thing to teach her to do it even outside of a classroom environment (when everyone else is done) on YOUR own time. But it changes the whole point of taking a class if you are doing their work. She probably paid to take the class to learn something but I bet she is not paying you to do the work for her. I think she is taking advantage of your kind, sympathetic heart :)

As far as not needing a SM--EVERYONE NEEDS a SM if only to repair seams on your store bought clothes that are never made well :) She could have done her own work much faster even in a limited time if she had her own SM, which she seems to oppose having. I think she set limits she could not possibly expect to reach without help.

Well, thanks my 2 cents worth! Anyway, any work you finish for her she should be grateful regardless of the mixed sewing techniques.

She asked me if I would be able to finish the top for her. She is the one who set the deadlines, not me (I would love to keep working with her at handsewing for another few weeks) She will be making another quilt for the other grandson, that she doesn't have any deadlines for and has already said that she wants to do the entire thing by hand NOBODY PAID ANYTHING FOR THIS CLASS!!! The ladies are all members of my church, and I volunteered to teach beginning quilting to those that wanted to learn. This is the only lady dedicated enough to come to every class - we are also friends outside of church. NOTHING about this quilt is easy on me, I have lpenty of other sewing that needs to get done without doing sewing for someone else who has set specific timelines for herself. I agreed to do it because she is desperate to have it finished and because she hasn't had the time (taking care of her DH while he is out of work sick, working full time, teaching Sunday school, and tons of other things). If you want to know what I have simmering: baby clothes, maternity clothes, crib sheets, HUG quilt for a friend, mending, and needed items for the soon-to-be-redecorated bedroom. Oh, and she already knows how to sew with a machine, she just isn't comfortable with machines and has said that she doesn't want to touch my machine, even if I am right there with her, because she is afraid that she will ruin it.

Had her DH not gotten sick, the quilt top would have been finished a long time ago. We all have different priorities, but I for one, would chuck everything if my husband was near death (as he was at the end of last year) - as her husband has been due to numerous medical issues.

Sorry if I misunderstood :) Didn't realize you were teaching the church ladies/friends for free. I guess I have a different mindset--when I cant finish a project I dont ask someone else to finish it--it just doesn't get done until I can go back to it. When my husband had a MAJOR heart attack in March, I just dealt with his problems and went back to my projects later when he was improved and home. I frequently had to forego what I wanted to do vs what he needed me to do and did it gladly. I work full time too plus I was writing my MA thesis for graduation in June.

You are truly a kind generous person for helping her out.

It will be perfect. My first quilt was hand pieced with a machine stitched border. It's holding up just fine. I can't see that tying would make any difference either. Finished however you get there is what counts.

Which reminds me that my quilt was hand pieced (EPP) and machine finished, border and quilting. Put it through the W/M yesterday on normal cycle and it held up great. BTW it's now dry without having to put it through the dryer, so it dries fairly quickly as well :-))) (Yes I'm happy about the last bit :-))
