If 27m quilters spend $3.3b, that's only about US$125 per head a year!
OK! So who's not pulling their weight over there? I don't know any quilters who ONLY spend that much a year. That is not even the cost of materials for one quilt. I recycle like made here, but if you factor in thread, needles, c - that doesn't seem much to me. About US$2.50 a week.
On the other hand, some of those quilters lied. Just flat out lied. Ragmop/Sandy--proud of my quilts and stash, hiding nothing ;-D (p.s. I was there, didn't answer any survey...)
I'm thinking this survey was an example of backwards engineering....
"Quilting is a $3.3 billion dollar industry"
There are 2.4 million quilters
Therefore each quilter must spend $125 each year on quilting.
I wonder how they get the 3.3 billion though. Seems like they don't count sewing machines or items bought at stores other than a quilt shop
- lots of quilters shop at chain stores but it would be hard for those stores to separate out the "quilting" purchases. Heck, I drop a pretty penny at the hardware store for things for quilting :-) I suspect hardware store sales for quilting aren't counted in that number or sales at office supply stores either.
I doubt they are counting anything other than fabric from quilt shops. What about magazines and books from the bookstores? And the purchases of those who go to yard sales, auctions, and thrift stores to find vintage or unusual fabric and lace for Victorian style crazy quilts. Debra in VA See my quilts at
