Quilters Inc

Just read on their site that in the first week, they received 1500 quilts for Quilters Comfort America.

I was looking for an address and came across this from Quilts, Inc. about Houston:

"Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from quilters worldwide, the Quilters Comfort America project has received more than enough quilts to place with evacuees. If you were planning on sending us a quilt but have not yet, we urge you to find use for it to help those within your own community. Thank you for your efforts."

I know several people that made quilts at a sew in yesterday. The local Crossfire ministry is filling a semi with goods so I took the last of the quilts there. It's great that people have responded in such a great way.

I saw that yesterday as well. AQS is still accepting bed quilts and baby quilts. It is not clear from their statement that these will necessarily be distributed in the near term. They say, "We will receive quilts into our warehouse and pack them to be shipped on to the disaster areas, when and where requested by the aid groups."

I sent mine there anyway, in the hope that they will be given where most needed.

Heh - heh!! I'm sorry for laughing - but I saw that one coming. Wish I had waited and given to our local group from the Gulf Coast. But I'm sewing as fast as I can.

I really don't know of one Phyllis, but I will do some checking for you.

Even if Quilters, Inc. has put out a "stop call" - I believe it will be temporary and they will need more - so check back with them also. K?

Will let you know what I can find out.

Will do Pat. And just a note - I am grateful for you appreciation, but I hardly deserve thanks.

It is so, SO rewarding to be able to help these families in any small way. You just can't imagine. Just holding a ladies hand yesterday, while she told me all her frustrations of trying to get help from FEMA, the ARC, not knowing what the condition of her home is, not knowing if or when she will be able to go back there. I felt so helpless and so trivial. When she got up to leave, I apologized for not being able to help her more - her words made me break out in tears, just like her - "Sweetie, you helped me more than you know, just by holding my hand." No, I guess I don't know - it seemed as if she were helping ME. Helping me to remember all that I have to be grateful and thankful for. Helping me to be able to give some small something back. Helping me, to have an opportunity to share that "human touch" we all crave so much.

I have received my "thanks" for any small thing I have done to TRY to help. Holding hands with an elderly woman who has lost everything and is grateful for a hand to hold. A hug from an itty, bitty, little girl I played with while her mom tried to make phone calls to locate housing. A simple smile from a man I handed a bottle of water to. And many, many more special, touching moments like these.

I just can NOT describe it in any way that touches the scope and the magnitude of how touching, how special, how meaningful, these moments are.

But thank YOU Pat, for being a friend and sharing with me.

Hugs, Tina

If that many are being given out - why did they ask us to stop sending quilts?

The group that was collecting them is Quilt. Inc. That is the company who will be having the wholesale market and the big quilt show "festival" in just a few weeks. I would guess they just don't have the time and personnel to dedicate to collection, storage and distribution any longer. Just a hunch.

How very sad. Well the good news is that AQS is still taking contributions because it is certain the need for these quilts sure hasn't dried up. Life goes on in commercial & merchandizing world I suppose.

I just look at it as they got the ball rolling very quickly and efficiently. Now someone else can run with it. Market and Festival both dump a lot of visitor money in the Houston coffers, and they could really use it at this time. The city's funds have been significantly dented with their generosity in taking in the evacuees.
