Not in my mincemeat - just dried fruit, apples, suet, brown sugar, orange and lemon juice and rather too much brandy!! Very easy, I really can't see the point of buying the over-sweet commercial stuff.

Adding meat minced up is supposed to be traditional, but I've never had it, and dont think I'd really like the combination. In my eyes sweet is sweet and savoury is savoury and never the two shall meet (except for chutney of course!).

Mines all made and in its jars, and the Christmas Puddings are sitting maturing too. I only make Christmas Puddings every other year - maturing is good!

I make Green Tomato mincemeat that is an adaptation in DH's family from a mincemeat that contains meat. For a very long time (until Aunt June got fancy and used boughten meat, according to Aunt Milly) they made mincemeat using game. Some years the fellas just weren't all that good at bringing it home, hence the green tomato mincemeat. They make a venison mincemeat on that side of the family that is to die for.

NightMist it is telling that every man over over 60 on that side of the family (and several under) has done jailtime for hunting out of season and/or poaching

Thank you for sharing this Jeanne :) There are some gorgeous quilts there. cheers Elly

I do believe that the German mincemeat has venison, at least, that is what my husband said. My gran always did the English mincemeat with raisins, fruit and suet.

i knew who you meant, Lizzy. we get that show here and i really enjoy watching all the things he learns and does there. j.

We have been getting his show for about 6 weeks, a replacement to 'The Cook and the Chef'. I have been enjoying it too, although I had never heard of him before.

OMG! I make this tooo! my mom gave me her recipe years ago! i just love it because there is no meat or fat in it at all. i freeze the lot of it and use it in pies, cookies for filling and even bake ham in it. soo gooood. i cant believe another person i know (other than family) uses green tomatoes!! how cool is that? amy in CNY

There is plenty of fat in my recipe, I use butter instead of suet. Even though it was originally a game recipe it calls for suet, fat from game is not particularly nice for eating. They don't fret about a few extra pounds on that side. I remember Uncle Morris talking to one of the young bucks who had just married a "city girl", and advising him to "get some weight on her", because skinny women tend to sicken when you have a bad winter.

Did I miss the recipe????

1996 Better Homes & Garden
  • says to used jar of bought mincemeat ???? Better Homes & Garden This copy was my GM's and is a bit worn out. I think she bought in
1960's.

  • another with no beef or brandy; does have suet
1972 The American International Encyclopedic Cookbook
  • stewing meat; no suet or brandy
  • green tomato and suet; no brandy
1948 The Wise Encyclopedia of Cookeryt

(((((((((Jeanne))))))))))))))) (those are hugs)

I hope you do get to the quilt show. Heck, I'd love to go with you, but I'm half a world away and a recluse, too. I don't know your situation, but I know mine, and how difficult it is to make me go out in public. I have only a select few friends and my sister that I am comfortable with. Thank goodness for internet shopping and friends.
