Quilting & Inauguration 2009

Howdy!

Oh, happy day, oh Happy, HAPPY DAY!

At last, sanity and intelligence return to the White House. Here at home in sunny Tx., it's a great place to quilt and have a front row seat to all the Inaugural Events.

YEEE-HAW!

Today's quilt is a jumble of novelty prints that apply to a friend's interests and career, teacher, mom, girlfriend, preacher's wife, native Texan. A fun, funny, personable lady. Reds & greens and divas and food and shopping and jewelry and purses and kids, surrounded by strips of Mary Engelbreit cherries. Roslyn and Jimmy Carter arrive at the White House, change to green thread, more VIPs walk thru' the doors, take a few more stitches. It's not easy to quilt when there's so much to see on the t.v.. But I wouldn't miss the show, or put down the quilt.

Cheers!

I stayed home to watch it! I have two VCRs and my Tivo recording different stations and I am toggling between two more! I can't get enough!

I'm headed to the meet my pop and bro for breakfast and then to the dentist. My 'hope' for the day is a local rescue get back in touch so I can re-home the repo cat I have been caring for. Maybe if they can't I should just send him to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.? Perhaps Obama can help me after all! I hear they need a pet. Cat's are easier than a dog anyway. : )

Hope folks enjoy the day whatever you are doing!

You're kidding, right?!?!? Sanity and Intelligence might walk up to the front door, but once they have entered the White House nothing matters but how to spin events to get yourself or your party elected next term :-)! Can you tell that I am totally UNenamoured by politics? Let's all remember that the President -- ANY President -- is no better nor worse than the rest of us -- he puts his pants on one leg at a time! You may "Remember" as you wish. I'm with Sandy....the (thankfully) former president is far WORSE than anyone I know. I have hopes for a better future.

Oh, Tia Mary, up until 8 years ago, I might have agreed with you, but omigod, at least this man can string 5 words together in a complete sentence. And I want my President to be smarter than me! I want him to be older than me too, but it was bound to happen sometime.

Beside, he appoints people to positions that do make an impact upon my life. Labor, Health and Environment, Energy.

I wish I had set my TIVO. The visiting nurse came just as Yo Yo Ma was starting to play. I asked if she would like to sit and watch the next few minutes with us but she was all business. I missed Obama's entire speech. I don't agree with all of his social issues but I agree with others who have posted that it will be nice to have a President who has command of the English language. I also agree that we must all step up to help others, the government can not do everything. Guess quilters have always known that. Quilters are always ready to use their hands to help others.

Well, Bush had command of the English language, it just wasn't the sort of English that most of us speak :-). DSis, who lives in Austin, could understand him perfectly because she listens to folks talk like that every day! Maybe I bes go hide wit IvyJane -- I'll pro'ly be gittin' rotten 'maters throwed at me now -- LOLOL! (whoooo that last sentence *really* messed with the spell checker) CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Obama even mentioned quilting:

"For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness."

Okay, not really, but a great speech nonetheless!

i heard that too. his grandma must of been a quilter. :) at least he understands the meaning of patchwork to use it as he did. i did go back and read the transcript and listen to the speech again.

i found it odd some of the media on tv afterwards said there were no memorable lines. i thot the 'extend a hand if they will unclench their fist' (or similar) was rather memorable. no joining hands in fellowship if your making a fist in anger. the whole world has some issues to solve and quickly. they wont be solved by anyone nation alone. it must be a join international effort of the people as much as of the governments to fix what ails our planet. j.

Obama's mother was a quilter. I understand he found a trunk full of her fabrics & didn't know what to do with them. About 6 months ago, I was standing in line at Costco to return something. The lady behind me & I struck up a conversation - I just had a sense that she was a quilter & she was. She is the one that told me about Obama's mother's fabrics. She has been in touch with someone involved with the campaign to see if Obama would be interested in doing something special with his mother's fabrics. Don't know if it will come to fruition, but she was feeling encouraged. I did Google Obama & quilter or something like that & found some information about his mom being a quilter. In fact, I even found some of the correspondence this woman had written. Can't hide anything anymore, huh??

I was at Asilomar earlier this week. I planned this trip with 14 other quilters 6 months ago. Never even thought about the inauguration being on January 20th. There are no TV's at Asilomar:( I called them last week & they assured me they would set up a TV in the lobby & they did. There was a standing room only crowd watching Obama being sworn in. A lady from the staff passed out boxes of tissue to the crowd. (I had a purse full!)

We have much to celebrate this year & I'm so happy that Obama has already started to make a difference!!

Man, had I only known you were at Asilomar I would have crashed! A friend and I drove to Back Porch. We got there to a sign on the door saying "closed of inauguration" Grrrr. He was sworn in around 9 - they don't open until 10, they couldn't have a laptop to watch the rest at the shop? We were so disappointed after a 2 hour drive to get there, as was the other lady who showed up while we were griping out front.

It would have been fun if we could have met you.

One of these days we'll be in the same place at the same time and know about it.

Isn't that crazy Marcella! We went to Back Porch on Monday & noticed the sign that they would be closed - you could have called:)

I went down to Back Porch on Jan. 2nd as well. They were sponsoring Kaffe Fassett's talk at a local school. And, I'm going again in August for Empty Spools. That should give me enough Asilomar till I go back in March of

2010:)

Yes - we need to have a meet up. We could plan something, huh? I just got an email that Round Robin fabrics is closing in February & having a closing sale starting the first week in February. I can't remember if I have ever been there or if it's worth making the drive??

Dang. I wish I'd known that. David knew Obama when he was just a State Senator from Chicago. I could have had David tell him what to do with the fabric.

Imagine the chance I missed to teach a future President or First Lady how to quilt.

i dont see why him now being president would eliminate you teaching Mrs O how to quilt. you still know him afterall, not as if suddenly you no longer know the man. he has just moved on to bigger and better things in the world. surely you could teach via email. heck you might even end up getting an invite to the WH for a one on one lesson. :) i reckon the WH could do with a few homemade quilts. a good creative way for Mrs O to fill in those long lonely days between dropping the girls at school and picking them up in the afternoon. you'll never know if you dont follow it up. good luck and do keep us informed of progress. :) j.
