Quilting postponed

Mar 28, 2007 7 Replies

I planned to do some machine quilting tonight but had to put it off. I did yard work today and now my arms don't want to work. My eyes are all dried out from an allergic reaction to pollen, so now I'm off to get a nice cool compress for them. Debra in VA See my quilts at

The next time you're in Wal-Mart or a large drug store, buy one of those eye masks that are gel-filled that you keep in the refrigerator. They are really good for puffy eyes and annoying headaches. In addition, they feel so good. Just an 'ahhhhhh' sort of feeling. If I did any sort of yard work, my arms wouldn't work either. My safe territory is limited to some nice big pots beside the outside doors, unless, of course, DH will buy me my very own chiropractor. Polly

The cool compress works better for me. I've got dry eyes and the water from the compress seeps into my eyes, washing them out a little as time goes by. Lovely feeling too.

I wish I could do a good container garden. I have the black thumb problem. There are a few things I can grow in real dirt, but pots just don't work at all. It is spring so I have to work on all the beds then I'm good for the growing season. Marigolds, giant sunflowers, and a few other goodies are all I can grow. I'm rather limited to tossing out seeds and waiting, so I've learned which seeds give the best results. I do have two tomato plants, and some bib lettuce to plant, and I hope I get more than I did last year from the 'maters. You wouldn't happen to know if lettuce can grow in a container? I've got a galvanized tub with dirt that needs something growing in it and I thought the lettuce might work. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Debra, some of the alarm bells are going off in my dim little brain. Is it okay to grow food in a galvanized container? Might be just fine but you'd better ask your friendly agriculture county agent. There's no need for me to try to grow anything tasty here. The gators wouldn't be interested but the wild hares would keep it pruned down to the dirt. Polly

Lettuce should do OK in a container. The women's club puts in a garden for the women's shelter every spring, and we always have the lettuce up in window boxes so the slugs can't get it. It's a special variety that you can tear off leaves for salads without chopping the whole plant. Use fresh compost soil and don't forget to water. Roberta in D

Thanks, Polly. Something dim in the back reaches of my mind worried me about the galvanized part too, so there must be something not good about it. I know I don't need my innerds galvanized. I'll put the edibles somewhere else. I've a plastic container that should work nicely for the lettuce. The tomatoes can go in the flower bed at the carport along with the sunflowers. The galvanized tub will get bright marigolds, tall in the middle and short ones 'round the edges. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I highly recommend 'pineapple crush' for the short marigolds. They are very pretty and will put up with just about anything. Polly

Thanks for the tip. I nearly bought some of those, then remembered I've got some yellow seeds from last year's blooms. I bought a yellow and orange mix for the tall ones, and something new to try. The new one is called Disco Flame. The package says "dwarf single French". They have seven flat petals that are red with yellow tips. I thought the picture looked jazzy enough to splurge a dollar fifty on the seed packet. I plan to sow them with the yellow seeds because I just don't know how they will pan out in the heat of the summer. It was too cool and wet to do anything out there today.
