received fabric from Bibijann

Several weeks ago we had a post about batik fabrics which are made in Tanzania, East Africa, by grandmothers who are raising the many AIDS orphans in that country. Jann Mitchell-Sandstrom is selling the fabric and returning all the money to the grandmas. Her website is

I followed the directions on the website and sent a check asking for a sampling of the different fabrics. About ten days later a package arrived with one yard each of four different batiks. They are wonderful. Three fabrics are each a different bright color with a hand print or a footprint in white scattered over the fabric. The fourth fabric is a two tone block print in more muted tones. The feel of the fabric is very nice. I was thinking of using the fabric in wall hangings but would be comfortable using them in a bed quilt now that I see the quality.

Later this year a church in our area is hosting an event to raise money for the AIDS crisis in Africa. I plan to make wall hangings or lap robes from African prints to donate to the event. Using this fabric made by the grandmas will make the pieces extra special. I challenge others to think how they can use this special fabric to raise funds and awareness of the AIDS crisis around the world.

Jann sent me some of her batiks too -the footprints are my favorite! I think her project in Tanzania is so wonderful, the idea of adopting a granny. (At the rate my DDs are going, this may be the closest I ever get to having grandchildren, adopting somebody's granny!) Roberta in D

I'm looking at the website, and I see the page describing the batiks, but I don't see how to purchase them. Can you point me in the right direction?

thanks! gail

Go to the bjdesigns tab, click on that and scroll down. You'll see Quilters in orange, read that paragraph. It took me a while to find it too. I'm just trying to decide how I would use it..... and thinking of nominating Susan for some humanatarian award... what one do they give for the most generous quilter for charity on the planet? She's amazing....thanks for pointing us to this one!!
