Signing quilt after completion?

Among my 2007 projects is a quilt for a friend who is completing a second two-year term as president of our AAUW branch

will give you more info).

There is no convenient way to have branch members sign the blocks, or sign patches: there are 50+ active members but not everyone is always at every meeting; we live across 20 miles or so; they're NOT quilt makers so no one will (a) have fabric or (b) have Pigma pens at hand. Because the recipient is the president, I can't set up a table at a meeting and have people sign without her finding out.

So: would it be possible to complete the quilt and put it out for people to sign after she gets it? I would have a Pigma pen available. I will use Warm & Natural batting, so the quilt will be fairly flat. I would ditch-quilt the portions where people would sign.

Thanks!

I don't see why that wouldn't work, and if I were the recipient, I would like to have the signatures even if I had already seen the quilt.

Don't see why not. I have had finished memory quilts signed at parties without problems.

Yep, it works just fine.

I think the main problem with doing it this way is, what if someone 'messes' up their signature... If the blocks are already in place, then the quilt is 'stuck' with it.

Instead of signing blocks I have made quilts that were signed on the inner border. Just plan the inner border to be a light fabric. Usually I haven't quilted the top before it is signed but a top makes a better gift than a stack of blocks. I present the top complete with the packing tape or ConTac paper on the wrong side of the area to be signed and several Pigma pens. Everyone is then invited to sign the quilt before they leave. After the signing if the signatures are not evenly spaced around the border I add a few words of wisdom to fill-in any blank spaces. I will try to find a few pictures.
