Singer 99K?

I was just given a Singer 99K, which reportedly works very well. It should arrive in a few days. Does anybody here have one? Anything special I should know? I understand it's a table-top machine made in the mid-1950's. If it works nicely for piecing, I will save the money I had set aside to purchase a new machine . . .

This is a good little machine....3/4 size. Sews a perfect stitch and will work great for piecing. Straight stitch only. I do not have one but am a member of the vintage Singer group...and we use one at church for making charity quilts.

That is a terrific machine to piece on. It is small so machine quilting wouldn't be so great. Straight stitch only. There is a photo of one here:

for the weight and portability a 99k will serve not toounlike a featherweight. I uses the same type of attachments. There are a lot of those around and they can be sort of fun.Taria

I have got one, my Dh bought it for my 20th birthday, 52 years ago next January. It served me very well until I went in for a machine with more stitches. It is still a back up machine. Although I converted it to electric I still have the handle that I could use it in event of a power cut. Shirley

I have a 99k, it is a wonderful little machine. A lovely straight stitch and wonderful for piecing. The attachments are great fun to use and very accurate. The ruffler does a beautiful job. Rarely do I see any with a bad paint job, usually the paint shines like it has a new coat of wax on it.

You got a treasure!! For sure!!! Did you get the manual with it?

Small but HEAVY :). Straight stitch only, so should be great for piecing.

I have one in a cabinet, I paid $25 for it a few years ago(I think I like it so much because it is in a cabinet, like the Necchi I learned to sew on).....a wonderful little machine, I think I like it better than the featherweight, not as finicky, and it reminds me of my grandma and her little treadle machine....Enjoy her.....as far as quilting with it, I am not sure, have not tried it, but many people quilt with their featherweights which are smaller so why not try! I have one, my neighbor has one, and I saw a man using one with a hand crank at the Cedar Creek, US Civil War, reenactment. He was making a uniform jacket with one, I talked to him for about 20 minutes and he just kept pinning, sewing and extolling the virtues of his machine. Bonnie, in Middletown, VA

I have an electric one, my FrankenSinger, cobbled together from several machines dating from 1949 to 1958! Works a dream. Perfect for piecing, but a tad small for quilting anything bigger than a baby quilt. First machine I ever made a garment on... I use it for teaching kids to sew.
