Something BAD ...........

Me poor ole computer has some how contracted a Trojan virus:-( That's why I haven't been around for a while. How do I get me 'puter to her ole self again? I have deleted it with the help of Norton's. But the ole gal is still funky! I hope the final analysis is NOT to re-do me whole system:-( Any suggestions?

TIA, Nana

IIRC (and there's no guarantee that I do!), you should be able to set things back to rights somewhat by going back to an old "restore point" - assuming, of course, that you're Windows XP or newer.

IIRC (see disclaimer above!), when you load apps on your computer, it automatically sets a "restore point" (a quickie "image" of your machine, the registry, etc) ... I would, with the help of the most computer savvy in your household (this is not for the faint of heart and I don't know what your experience is with computers), go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore ... follow the instructions on the wizard.

At some point, you'll be directed to choose the "restore point" - choose the date/restore point that you *know* was when your computer was running fine and had all applications that you wanted installed (like EQ6 - if you have it - so you don't risk using up an activation). After that, I'm fairly sure that you'll have to reboot - when you reboot, it may not be as it was when all was perfect in your computer world, but it should be much better! :)

The Microsoft troubleshooting web site has lots of good info on doing this! :)

Hugs!! And good luck!!

Do you still have the Windows installation discs?

If so, you could do a "repair install" - that, again, IIRC , will fix the problems (do a refresh, if you will) without making it so you have to reinstall your programs.

May I ask what kind of trojan you had - if you know? Sometimes, Norton doesn't fix everything and remnants of the trojan/virus is left on your HD - which is usually why even after it's "fixed" it's still not "right." There's a few of the little boogers that are notorious for being tenacious - even too tenacious and sneaky for Norton.

If that's the case, I don't think a regular repair and install will work for you ... you'd have to find every last trace of the little booger trojan and delete it (don't ask me how I know this - that was the worst *36* hours of my life!!) first.

I'd really like to help!! :) So please holler back when you can!!

Hugs!!

When did you last defrag your disk? Mine has speeded up a lot since doing that...

They have forums (you need to register, but it is free) that have answers to just about every problem you could have. I would start with the anti-spyware and anti-virus forums.

Start with the spyware removal FAQ's at

Just be careful, and run items step by step. The link to "Basic computer maintenance everyone should do"

a good place to start. If you aren't focused on having the 'puter entirely brand new fresh, you might just download and use spybot on it first, to make sure you got rid of all the nasties, and then, as Kate suggested, run a defrag. The link to spybot search and destroy is on the geeks site, at

Now, you didn't say, but I am going to assume the "poor ole computer" is a windows computer. MS has a bunch of anti-virus and anti-spyware "beta" programs on the support site. You might want to try the 'Windows Defender' or the 'Malicious software removal tool'. They can all be found at the Microsoft.com download site

The suggestion to use system restore was a good one. If you can't, there might be a (bad) reason. Perhaps the trojan cleared the restore points? In any case, a search for "system restore" on the MS site should lead you to some valuable info on how to set restore points etc.

Hope your system is back to normal soon!
