Spare a little love?

The newborn group we support in north, waaaaay north Mississippi (they're so far north they're almost Yankees) is going to have a baby shower. They have received requests for 80 arrivals expected in May. The list of things needed includes quilts, receiving blankets, sleepers, gowns, onsies and caps. I don't know if they've been attacked by the stork or the economy but gracious! Eighty? So. If you have the time and the heart to stitch a little quilt or something, the baby shower gifts can be sent to: Newborns in Need 157 CR 1351 Saltillo, MS 38866

I don't know but I highly recommend that all of you of child-bearing age avoid the area. Polly

Polly, I checked the website but really didn't see quidelines for quilts. I am in the middle of making baby quilts for my niece, and I anticipate having a TON of leftover material, batting, etc.

What size/construction/etc do they need?

They will welcome anything. This chapter is NOT a neonatal group that must abide by hospital guidelines. I generally make the newborn blankets and quilts about a yard square. Bigger or smaller will be fine though. It's an easy size that lets you play with a block pattern you've wanted to try without being committed to a 'real' quilt. And don't worry about perfect points or a whirlygig that whirls the wrong way. Babies don't care; they only notice soft and bright. Polly

Polly,

Thanks so much for posting this! I have been wanting to help locally since my little man was in the NICU, and had no idea where to turn. Our local NIN group supports the hospital he was born in! I think I will slowly start making some little quilts to send. I have a ton of receiving blankets that I saved for backing small quilts, and now I have a place to use them!

Danielle, if you're planning to help at a NICU unit, you'll want to see what their guidelines are. Some of them are, of course, very limited as to what's acceptable. The Mississippi group under a stork attack simply needs help. Polly

Well, she did say 'in May' which ought to give us plenty of time for a baby quilt or blanket and time to practice hiding our own Easter eggs. Polly

I just thought I'd bring this request back on to the list in the light of Bonnie's request following her devastating loss, quoted below:
