Square Kufic

Anybody here seen a quilt that used Square Kufic lettering?

It's an ancient Arabic letterform commonly used for carved inscriptions on buildings - often formed into designs that look a bit like a maze or crossword puzzle.

I have tried Google. Not a lot of help. I can't even find a full set of letters for the Arabic alphabet. No precedent in a quilt design appears to exist.

I'm thinking of a stage banner for the Middle Eastern band I play with - see the photos at the end of my homepage.

Hi,

I have an art digital catalogue I downloaded from a website. It has a lot of Arabic lettering on it. Not quilts, but could easily be adapted... I was thinking of making on from one of the designs.

is the site.... they have a downloadable digital catalogue (it is just an exe but it is virus free) and some of it is kufic... each piece has a description and some of them are written as kufic. Anyhow as I said not a quilt site but an art site. Maybe it will help.... some do look like quilt banners

I found more stuff... just because I have the worlds largest collection of random links lol

has instructions for all the various kufi styles and does have the complete alphatbets for the styles. Again not a quilt per say but I think you mentioned not being able to find the alphabet itself. and then this
formatting link
which belive it or not is apparently a quilt block in the kufi design. Though I am not an expert in reading that script and can not guarentee that it is in fact c orrect. HTH

I can't see quite all of it for the square form - no "ya". But the point of the site is to sell Sakkal's book and services, so you can't expect everything.

This one looks very like it wants to be a quilt:

Oh, I think I agree, that does want to be a quilt. I think it will look great when you finish it. You make it and I'll drool on it, OK?
