Tears for another QI

The day started so good around here. Found out that finally my son and his grilfriend are moving back home from the islands. Just made my day. Nothing could have dampened my mood until.........

I was doing some general pick-up and decided to go sweep up the birds room. Messy little critters they are. Just installed a new wood looking floor in t here to make my life a little easier. Grabbed the broom and dustpan. So, here I am just sweeping away, got sidetracked and walked out the door and something caught my eye. I back up and there are 2 of my cockatiels laying on the floor of their cage. Da*n. Go get DH cause I can't pick them up. He removes them and some escape in the room. I can hear him cussing from the other room. Then he comes in and has to ask how many are supposed to be in here. I go in and count and I look over and in another cage my DD's lovebird is dead.

We think that the fumes from the new floor has killed my birds. We immediately removed the rest of them from the room. I am just absolutely sick over this. WE finished the floor but I left the birds outta the room for another week before moving them in there just to make sure. Well I guess it wasn't enough. Any ideas to how make sure all the fumes are gone?

Oh, Cindy....we have birds, too....I can so feel your pain about losing your precious feathered friends. I'd be sick, too. My thoughts are with you, and I hope your other little guys are going to be OK.

I suggest you call the company that manufactured the materials you used in the floor! They need to know about this, and may have some suggestions for you. (And I'll bet they play close attention to your situation -- they will want to avoid lawsuits!)

So sorry about your birds! They are members of the family!

Cindy, Sending you hugs. It could of been the fumes. The smell was awful when we did our hardwood floors over a few years back. If I ever get them sanded again and done...we'll go to a hotel. Pami

We lost a little bird life today too. Found a tiny hummingbird with broken wings. Honest to goodness, we really did call the Audubon Society and the National Wildlife Federation and got incredible compassionate guidance. Ever done CPR on something so weightless you can't tell it's in your hand? As directed, we spooned only a drop of sugar-water where her beak met her head to 'force feed' the little feathered darling. Gently, barely rubbed her throat to urge her to swallow. We protected her, saw that she was warm. Allowed nothing to harm her. It wasn't enough. The weather here has been violent and we suppose the dangerous winds must have hurled her into something. She opened her eyes, fluttered just a bit and did not breathe anymore. I wish this attempted rescue had a happy ending. We were very anxious to do a roll call to see if our hummingbirds who feed here constantly were all accounted for. They all came in for supper and we were glad to see them. We're trying to be glad we were here to shelter this little stranger, if only for a moment. Polly

Oh Cindy, I'm so sorry. I wish I had some suggestions for you but I would have done the same as you, thinking a week was enough, since that seems to be the common factor. If there's a way to air it for awhile longer, open windows to the outside, I'd try that. But I can't think of a thing I world have done differently. {{{{{{{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Putting my paint store / floor finish hat on here, I have no idea if there's a test for the odors, but most floor coatings cure over a period of 30 days or so. They're about 90% cured in a week, but air circulation has a huge effect, and most people tend to button up rooms tight.

Cindy, I have no idea of how to get those fumes out of there, but I wanted to say how sorry I am that this happened to your lovely birds.

I am so sorry Cindy. That is a really tragic story. Hopefully others will at least be alerted so you might be saving other little birds from the fate of yours.

5 years ago we had a house inspector look at the home we were buying. One thing I remember talking with her about was indoor air quality. SHe was also a nurse and mold was kind of a big deal then. Her recommendation was everyone open their house at least once a week to exchange the air. Most indoor air quality, even without new flooring is pretty bad. I had no idea there were so many fumes with the flooring though. I hope the rest of your birds will be ok. I wonder about other folks and laminate flooring? Armstrong claims its products have low emissions. (check 'floorscore'

Thanks, Jane, but it was Cindy whose birds were overcome by the fumes.

How very sad, Cindy. So many toxic chemicals around these days. Did the 'tins' (or whatever, say nothing about possible harm to humans or animals? that could result from using the product? Check what/if the manufacturers said anything; and I do think you should contact them to tell them what happened to your little birds. I don't mean for the sake of any compensation but so that they can consider re-labelling their products in the future. I hope the others will be all right. . In message , Cindy Schmidt writes

How tragic. Poor little mites. i love birds, not in the house, but still, i can only imagine loosing 3 pets at once. {{{hugs}}} for you. And, yes, you should contact the flooring manufacturer, they may not know how toxic the floors are to small pets.
