The B&B Alien Thing

I'd had some light blue print fabric I got sick of looking at since I'd had it so long so I set out to do something, anything with it. I started making a simple courthouse step block with some varied hued burgandy but thought it was boring. Everyone has blocks they really like and I'm no different but I also have two that I do _not_ like and courthouse steps happens to be one. I folded back some burgandy that I'd dyed, added it to the corners but still thought it was boring so I stitched some embroidery in light blue on some of those. I puttered and turned a bit here and there. It was okay, so I made a second one but still thought it was fairly uninspiring so I tossed them both onto the bed and stopped and stared. Suddenly I saw at least 3 separate patterns in there for the first time. You could have knocked me over with a feather. This was totally unplanned and I realized this is why I continue to quilt, why quilting has yet failed to ever become boring. I managed to make a full size top until I ran out of one of the essential fabrics.

(Yes it's blurry-but my batteries went dead before I couldtake another photo.) The questions are:

  1. What the heck *is* the name of this block anyway? I have a courthouse step, a pineapple and some embroidered pockets. Courtapple? Embroidasteps? What?

  1. How/what in the world am I going to do to quilt it?

That's really pretty, Terri.

Quilting? I'm tempted to say name it 'Knock me down with a feather' and quilt it with feathers >g< but I don't think that would be right. Sorry, I don't have a sensible idea - it's my worst part of P&Q!! . In message , Terri writes

I like this idea! And if you don't mind my saying so, you certainly made a lot of blocks for something you don't like! Gorgeous! Roberta in D

That's beautiful! Wish I could help, but I can't name the block and have no ideas (yet) on how to quilt it. I only know I want it and wish I had made it.

I have no idea what you might call the block and I know that the triangles are NOT flying geese. However, when I looked at your picture, I wanted to name the quilt "When Geese Go Courting".

Wow! Terri, I can't imagine making that many blocks if I didn't like the pattern! But it's gorgeous, nonetheless, so good for you for sticking with it. :) As for quilting it, I have no idea; you'll probably want to keep it simple so as not to detract from the piecing. A name? I'm drawing a blank, so I'm afraid I'm not help there, either. :S

I feel the same way about all of those log cabin style blocks.

I've seen your embroidered pockets in quilt patterns before. They were called photo corners, like the old fashioned photo corner mounts for scrap books.

I see a center square with multiple frames, each frame with large photo corners. Looks sort of pineapple-ish. I'd call it Frames and Corners or Courthouse Pineapple.

I dunno. Embroider or quilt something cool in the center squares and then SITD around the frames would be my best guess. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Thank you Sandy. If it weren't for the secondary pattern I got so excited about I'd have stopped at two, believe me!

You mean the embroidery? Never fear, I'll post a good photo of it when I'm done. My grand-daughter is coming tomorrow for a sleepover at Nana's house though so I doubt I'll get much done on it this weekend.
