the diamond saga continues

OK Karen, here's what I think:

The 9-patches are all light to dark from left to right.

The green diamonds are slightly shaded from light to dark, from end to end (as you said you had done for all your diamonds), so your green ones are as the pattern anyway. The blue ones are shaded light to dark from left to right.

I see absolutely no reduction in beauty/attractiveness in placing the blue diamonds exactly as you have made them, just like the green ones, but up the other way. So that you place your blue diamond with the light end abutting the light square of each nine patch. This will give you a light area there - just like the light area of green in the centre. At the centre you will have the dark blue alternating with the light green. There is already a mid blue alternating with the light green, so the difference will hardly be noticeable at all. In fact, I think the dark side of the blue diamonds looks a little bit 'wrong' placed where it is - given that the greens are shaded the other way.

I believe you are absolutely fine, no real problem at all. You panicked because you saw it was different; but it is not a disaster, as you will see readily, when you look at it again thinking more calmly.

Hope that helps. . In message , "Karen, Queen of Squishies" writes

I will stick 'em up on the wall like you suggest and snap a picture to look at. I don't want to lose the affect of the depth in the design. I'll try it and see.

It looks like the "blue" diamonds are shaded side to side, the "green" ones end to end. However, I would take what you have and design a new layout that uses the work you have done. It won't be the same, but will be gorgeous. Have fun, Pati, in Phx

Karen,

I don't know what the overall pattern is, but maybe your version is simply unique with the light to dark shaded top to bottom? Who knows, it may be better than what you had planned.

I'm thinking you shouldn't be so quick to count out the way you've done them, Karen. The original is lovely, of course -- it's a Jinny Beyer, after all. However, in my imagination I can see these star points shaded end to end, and they give a different but equally lovely effect. Can you put them together temporarily and then use mirrors to see what would happen?

Yes, I'm working on getting them all up on the wall to have a look. I'll take a picture for us to evaluate. I want it to have the depth so characteristic of Jinny Beyer.

Howdy!

Turn the quilt sideways; top-to-bottom becomes side-to-side. If that doesn't do it, turn the house over.

I'm with Patti (upthread). I actually think the look might be even better. Who says Jinny has the final word? If you use your diamonds (shaded light to dark) with the dark sides against either the dark or light sides of the 9patches, then you end up with a terrific glow in the center. That really shows off the value contrast (which is what her quilts are all about anyway).
