I have one that I took apart, sewed a cord to, sewed a few inches of curtain weights to the other end of the cord, and got a clarinet/ saxophone pull-through out of it.
The material doesn't matter much for a sax, except it should absorb water quickly. For a clarinet, you want it to be quite weak, so that if it snags the octaving tube it's the fabric that gives way and not the tube - old disintegrating silk works very well.
