What's your favorite?!

I like the planning, cutting, and piecing. I don't like putting the sandwich togeher, and the quilting part is not my favorite either so I usually do a minimum expression quilting (the minimum needed to hold the thing together). Luckily I can discipline myself (most times) to do the sandwiching and quilting otherwise I'd have a lot of tops hanging around!.

Speaking of a gazillion dollars. . . has anyone seen the new Gingher Rotary cutter for $69.99???????? I wonder if it also takes special blades that cost more gazillions of dollars? I saw it on Eleanor Burns website

Now there's a price we can all love. Thanks, Val. Polly

"Val" I've got several sizes of bandage scissors from when I was using that sort

Sorry I wandered off like that.

I recommend any of the good brands of scissors. Ginghers are at the top of the list. They're a quality scissor at a reasonable price. The snub nose scissors seem to be getting more popular and easier to find now.

i just love to wander thru the fabric stores and choose the fabric. of course, by the time i get there i have a pattern or idea in mind. i also love to sort thru my stash to find the perfect color or style of fabric. As i still have EQ4, my selection of fabric is limited, but i have designed some wonderful quilts with it and produced them.

Based on time spent:

  1. Looking at quilt related sites on the internet (3-4 hours per day)
  2. Buying (I have a huge stash,library,patterns,notions,knick knacks,...)
  3. Seeing the quilt come together on the design board
  4. Sharing mine and seeing others' work

Wow. That is really cool. But I'll bet with a cast metal handle it's fairly heavy and would get heavy in your hand if you were cutting very much.

I'd be so light headed and nauseous from dropping $70 on a rotary cutter I'm not sure I could operate the thing if it were made of ultra light titanium.

I need a cool cloth for my neck, somebody fan me and bring the smelling salts! *thud* Val

Good grief! I wouldn't way no if someone wanted to give it to me, but I certainly wouldn't spend that kind of money on a rotary cutter -- unless, maybe, it does all of the calculating and cutting without me?

M&Ms are here now. . . . .

Why do we want blunt scissors? I have a classroom set of the kid's blunt scissors.

Seriously, why would a quilter want blunt scissors? Only three years into quilting. Please be patient with my prolonged newbie-ness. (Besides, I hold the drak chocolate M&Ms -- proof positive they do do melt in your hands and get on the keyboard.)

Howdy!

But-- but-- but, Val! It comes w/ a hole in the handle for hanging, the cutter or a tag on the cutter! And its own carrying case/storage tin WITH lid! It's nickel! And! And! And! You can get it elsewhere for less.

Might have it at JoAnn's, w/ a 40% coupon or otherwise on sale, we know how fun it is to shop there!

Would like to read a review, hear from someone who actually has one or has used it. May be something else special about it. ;-)

R/Sandy -- somebody hand Val the ammonia bottle.. or a shot of rum

Uses for blunt scissors: Kay, there are several, I'm thinking. Sometimes, they're needed when clipping out the background when doing lace insertion; probably not needed in piecing. Some people like to wear their scissors on a sort of necklace so the scissors are always handy. That's not something I'm going to do. I try to keep a pair of scissors at every possible work station. They all seem to migrate back together and now and then, I have to distribute them. The quilting need for blunt scissors that I have right now is for trapunto. There are lots of ways to accomplish the trapunto effect which is merely to have extra padding beneath specific areas. Let's say you have a bunny or flower that you want to be raised up from the other fabric just a little. You make a sandwich with the bunny fabric right side up, a layer of fluffy batting beneath it and a scrap of muslin under those. You stitch around the bunny through all the layers. Here's the blunt part: next, you must cut the unneeded batting from around the edge of the bunny. The trick is to not put a snip in the fabric around the bunny. "They say" that the duck-billed Ginghers are best for this but, in my hands, a tire tool would be easier. That's why I was asking for a good choice on blunt scissors. So glad you asked. It gave me an opportunity to play know-it-all. How did I do? Polly

Maybe if it came with blades that didn't get dull or get nicked it would be worth all that moolah??? Now there's an idea!

By the way - did you all know that Fiskar's bought Gingher last year? I don't know if that will change the quality of the Gingher scissors - hopefully, I have all the scissors I need, so I won't have to find out.
