When it rains it pours, or SM tension problems?

Maureen asked -

Okay, I did it! Last night after I thoroughly cleaned Lily and my problem was not solved. New needle, etc. I got out a teeny screwdriver, and I turned that bobbin screw. It seems it just need something between and 1/8 and 1/4 turn to the right.

So now I'm wondering, how many of you actually adjust your bobbin tension? How often?

From Polly - I frequently adjust mine. I think it's because I like to use Invisifil a lot and just might decide to swap to Coats & Clark for something. Honestly, I only adjust it when I see that my test scrap doesn't look to suit me. So glad you've learned this easy trick. Beats the heck out of taking your treasured SM to the dealer. Polly

I adjust mine quite a lot, for different threads and processes. O loosen it off quite a bit for double needle stuff, especially on knits...

You may not have done anything except use it! They do occasionally just work loose, especially if they have a period of heavy use.

Must ask: Did you put a teeny tiny line of fingernail polish on the bobbin so you know where 'home' is on it? I sure was glad I had on the Viking.

Some people buy a second bobbin case just to adjust. It's often necessary when using different types of threads. I think the trick is....to put the bobbin in the case, hold on to the thread and let the bobbin case drop. The bobbin case should drop slowly....just at the point where it doesn't move at all and begins to move down the thread. Adjust the bobbin tension screw to reach that point. Then adjust the top tension to get a good stitch.
