Woohoo.....I got a job!

Just when I was about ready to give up and face the fact that I may never work again, I got a job! After six months of unemployment I had just about given up. Programming jobs in the Bay Area are few and far between. I have only interviewed for one job since I was laid off and that's the job I got. They started the interview process three months ago! That's the longest process I have ever been through. I had given up on them, figuring that they had hired someone else. But, I got a call today and they offered me the job.

It is a good job working as a programmer for a Winery. It's a $10,000 a year cut in pay from what I made on my last job but, what the hey...in today's job market that's not too bad. And, they will be reviewing my performance in 90 days to see about bumping my salary up.

Now....I just hope I can do the job. I have severe arthritis in my neck which causes me chronic pain. I hope that I will be able to learn a new programming language and make it through an 8 hour day. My hope is that working again (I really like to work) will help my mental outlook enough that it might help out with the pain.

Anyway...wish me luck!

Congrats! But, does this mean you'll have to cut back on quilting? Is being gainfully employed worth it?

Such great news! What winery? My DH has been in the Spirits business for

30 years. Get some good medication for the pain and plunge right in. Good luck and let us know how you like it.

Hi Mardi,

Heaps of Congratulations and Good Luck on getting this job! I just wanted to mention that I tend to use homoeopathic remedies, and that I've found Rhus Tox and/or Arnica to be especially good for arthritic type pains and stiffness. Working at a Winery,....might just be a few hic... perks in that? Hic oo:-) Bestest, Lynn

Good for you! I also was hired into the first job I interviewed for after 9 months of a lay off. I celebrate my one year anniversary next friday! You will get MORE quilting done now, believe me. Folks think getting laid off is like a forced vacation but looking for a job is a JOB! I did very little quilting during my hiatus. You will do well! It sounds like a wonderful job. Take two gold stars out of petty cash!

Congrats, Mardi. I hope you are physically able to handle the job. 6 months seems to be the average time for finding a new job these days!

I'm impressed. I was a programmer for years - COBOL but haven't worked now for about 12 years (and I'm only 49). I don't think I could learn a new language and remember everything anymore. I'm thinking of getting something part time in retail. Debra in Idaho

omygosh that's such great news! Why don't you consider making room in your budget and schedule RIGHT NOW for massage therapy on your shoulders and neck??????????? With that kind of medical attention to your neck (it is NOT a luxury) you should be able to stick with it. Thanks for letting us know.

Now I suppose you won't be dying many fabrics, hmm? darn.

Rather than reply to each post individually, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the kind words of encouragement. This is really a great group of people!

I got a massage today (I treated myself) and I am pain free. I had forgotten how good it felt. I am going to get a weekly massage for a while. I think between that and working again, I may be on the road to recovery...or at least to learning how to live with chronic pain.

Again...thanks everyone!
