Camera Recommendations?

Well, I learned today that my camera (only about 2 years old) is a goner after DH dropped it the second day of our vacation in Australia... so I am on the lookout for a new digital camera. I'm relatively savvy as far as they go, but not wanting the kinds with F-stop, or all that technical stuff.

Any anecdotal stories about the kind of digital cameras y'all use? Approximate costs, ease of use, megapixels, etc. info appreciated.

Carolyne...I have recently bought the Fujifilm Finepix S9600 and love it. It is very close to my much loved FF S602 zoom but with more megapixels, a better zoom facility, a SuperMacro option, as well as the ability to continuously shoot or take videos. The US equivalent is the FF S9100 and you can read the review here:

It has the look and feel of a more expensive DSLR but is much cheaper....beingconsidered a 'bridge' camera. You can simply point & shoot on the Auto setting or you can experimentusing the settings. Either way the camera takes care of most things and has an image stabilisationsetting for the 'shakies'. A little more money than your average pocket sized digital camera but considering I paid around £650 for my FFS602 zoom 5 years ago and around £240 from Amazon for the FF S9600 in June

2007...I think it was well worth the money. I now own two brilliant cameras :o)

My last camera was a Fuji and it always took good pictures. Now I have a Panasonic Lumix DmCfz30 and I'm still trying to learn all of the features but it takes really nice pictures too.

I need a new camera also. Mine is ok. It is a Kodak. It was around

100.00. It takes great outside, but when I try to take pictures in the school gym or say our sanctuary at church you can't get good pictures. I've tried taking the flash off, turning it on night setting. It just doesn't work. I'd like to find a good camera that will do inside pictures. I also want one that if I take a movies that I can get pictures off of that. I thought I could with my Kodak that I have but it doesn't. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Small world! My first digital that we got the night before Maya was born was a Fuji film with a great big 8 MB of memory, woohoo! :-)

Then when my in-laws arrived at Christmas 2005 they harassed DH into buying me a proper camera since the Fuji was broken (still took pics though, I just had to upload the card a lot to see what I had), and it was the Panasonic Lumix (not the same as yours but I'm too lazy to run downstairs to check the camera model number) that recently broke. It came with a 256 mb card, but I upgraded to 1 gig cards awhile back(it wouldn't take 2--lovely! I could take as many pictures and videos as I wanted with no problem.

I've had good success with both of them. Thanks for the info!

Maya's looking at this, and she's saying, "Too fancy!!" LOL. She tends to take a lot of pictures now, she's actually getting pretty good! We were just talking about getting her own 'real' digital camera for her upcoming birthday in October! :-)

Thanks, cowchipper!

9 megapixels!!

Wow. What a beautiful thing. Again a bit too 'fancy' for what I had in mind right now. :-) Maybe sometime in the future, after we've paid off the new (used) mini-van! :-)

Just to clarify, I'm basically looking in the under $200 range, I've used Fuji Finepix as well as Panasonic and liked them both...my BIL's camera in Australia was a Canon and it worked great too.

I have a Kodak also, Shannon. Same problem as you, great pictures outside and in the house, but forget school and church programs. Sandy (also a WalMart shopper)

Shannon & Sandy....Both these photos were taken using my Fuji Finepix 602 Zoom using Auto, then Night settings.....both using the camera's auto focus & inbuilt flash.

The room had only 1 Bullseye downlighter over my PC...where I sat to take thepictures in my very dark craft attic. It was around after 11.00 p.m. at night and almost pitch blackover on that wall. As you can see the Night setting produced a very good result...even taking intoaccount the shaky hand of a very amateur photographer. LOL

Thanks for the input Marilyn. I'll have to keep that in mind when I can get my husband to buy me a new camera. Anyone else have camera's that are great for gym and inside with terrible lighting. Thanks.

Oh, one more thing. When it is on night it lightens thing up but if it's moving it's all blurry. How is your's on that Marilyn?

I have a Sony Cybershot. I paid about $250 for it over three years ago, and that included an extra memory card and carrying case, and an external USB 'thing" (I have no idea what the technical name for it is) to use to upload pics to the computer, so it wont use up the batteries in the camera. It is a 4.0 megapixel, and I have the same problem with terrible inside pictures and gym pictures. It is fairly easy to use, but I sometimes have problems with the lighting settings. I am sure its just ME! My zoom only distorts when I try to use it. I would someday like a camera with better zoom capabilities for sporting events.

Never had the need for trying it yet Shannon but from the manual it appears you need to select High Speed Shooting....which is OFF by default....then the appropriate Scene setting. This gives you a faster shutter speed and cuts down on the blurring.....but will cut battery life. I guess most of these things are simply a trade off unless you opt for a really complex camera. Take care, Marilyn

Since you've got your memory cards with you already, make sure you choose a camera that will use the same kind of memory you already have and you'll save yourself quite a bit of money... memory cards are very expensive in Australia! (we sent one to my father for a present because it's so much cheaper in the US...) Most of the little point-and-shoots are very good now.

I have a Canon Powershot A630 and I am super pleased with mine. It takes wonderful pictures and is very user friendly. I bought mine with a 1Gig Memory Card plus shipping for $195.00 off of

I did have a problem uploading pictures to my computer a few days ago but I called Canon's helpdesk and they are absolutely wonderful in helping. The guy who was helping me walked me through everything step by step and it just turned out to be my driver needed updating. I highly recommend this camera to anyone shopping around for a moderate priced camera that takes great photos.

Agreed! I have a couple 1 gig (my old camera wouldn't take the 2 gig) SD Smart Disk media cards...they can be reused over and over, so I am looking for a camera that can also use them. I saw a couple of nice ones at Walmart for a little over $100, they are actually better than the one I had but not as nice as the newer models. May go ahead and just get one there--I'm addicted to taking pictures and I can't stand it when I can't!! Maya had her first soccer practice for the season last night and darn it, I couldn't take a single pic to document it. Wah.

All of the brands have cameras in the 200 range. Have you tried Costco they have several cameras for that price. If I remember I was looking at the Sony, fuji and panasonic there for my son. They were the smaller pocket types but the Megapixels were high and the focus was 3x. I never did get him one though.
