New Project - Recipe Scrapbook

Hi,

Well, I am getting ready to start work on a family recipe scrapbook. I have been wanting to do one of my great great grand mothers recipes as well as my mom's recipes and my own recipes (I am a very good cook!) and have been thinking about it for awhile.

I bought a nice little spiral bound card stock scrapbook about 5x7 in size. What I have decided to do is to put the recipes on 3x5 cards with the little tabs at the top (die-cuts) and then laminate them and then use one of the Fiskars punches that round the corners and add photo slots so that I can fit the laminated recipes cards on to the page that way. So when I want to make a recipe I can pull it out and take it to the kitchen. If it gets dirty I can just wipe it off and then when done I can slip it back in the recipe book.

I have some cute little stickers and some antique wall paper like papers I am going to use as well as little food related buttons and some nice ribbons.

I will let you all know how it goes and try to post some shots of it as I go along.

Oh wow! What a great idea. I never thought of doing the cards that way. I actually copied one of my recipe swap pages the other day and took the copy to the kitchen rather than take a chance on the actual page. Have you thought of a picture of the family member the recipe is from added to the page? I have a few of my favorite family recipe pages and I put pictures on the page as well. I didn't put them in my swap recipe book, rather they are in my heritage box and I did them in 12x12. I could go back and do a small card like you are doing and add the recipe to my usable book. Thanks for the great idea. Sandy

I really like that idea Robert. I've heard others doing recipe books. I never thought I would like one considering I'm a messy cook. LOL. I would hate to do all that work and get flower and stuff all over my pages. Thanks for the idea. I will be sure to remember this little tip. Have fun. I'm sure they will turn out great.

That is a good idea to laminate those cards. I know some of my moms recipes and my own show signs of good usage over the years! LOL I have always wanted to do a recipe book since I heard about recipe swaps on the group. Another project to add to my "someday-to-do list". Thanks for that idea Robert! Linda

That is a great idea. I have a huge notebook full of recipe pages from the swaps we do in here as well as recipes I got from my mom. Laminated cards are such a wonderful idea! I have the recipe pages in page protectors and yes they do need wiping off from time to time. Jacqui

This is a really good idea. I will have to add this to my list of things to do. Another thing you can use to store the recipes in the book is a library book pocket. It would be cool to use the library cards to write the recipe on. Just an idea.

I love that you have figured out a way to remove the recipe cards while protecting them. Just watch, the next time we have a recipe swap, everyone will be incorporating your method into their pages... I know I will (and hope they will to)! Thanks Robert... Glad you're still here you've got a lot of valuable ideas and questions/debates. It's been fun.

I would love to do the photos. However, we had a major fire 10 years ago that wiped out almost everything. We have two albums left that were in storage at the time, but nothing of my great great grand mother, my great grand mother, etc.

With most of my family dead (just me and my mom left) I don't have anyone else in the family I can ask for copies. So, I am going with journaling information that my mom will provide.

Hi Robert,

Would you mind taking a couple of pics of the spiral bound scrapbook and the cards please? I'm a "pictures" type of person... lol, and need the visuals to have it in my mind. I've been wanting to start my own recipe book as well, but haven't ventured there yet.

Ok, I have put up some images of the scrapbook I bought to use for my recipe card scrapbook. I have also included am image of the tab card I plan to put my recipes on and then laminate.

The tab card is from a Sizzix die cut and if you don't have that Sizzix and don't want to buy one I have included a template file you can download, print out and use to manually cut your own cards using a crafts knife.

For the laminating I am going to be using a heat version meaning it isn't like a Xyron machine it actually heats the laminating pouches and then fuses it to the paper and then seals the edges. I will then using scissors trim the tab cards leaving about 1/4 to 1/3-inch of sealed laminate around them. You can of course use heat free with something like the Xyron machine or you can by machine and heat free laminate pouches at office supply stores. Though these I find hard to line up. I am going to use the edge rounding and photo slit punch for the two outer edges of the scrapbook pages and then manually cut matching slits on the inner sides of the pages. Because the corner rounder punch won't work on the insides of the pages only the corners.

That sounds like a great idea. It would make a wonderful gift idea also. I would love to see the pictures of it when you are finished. Thanks..

That sounds like a great project. I like the laminating idea to keep the cards clean. April had a recipe book started for her son. Maybe she'll post pictures of it.

Glad you're back Robert. We need your great ideas.

I'll post a picture of my new favorite punch I bought over the weekend and the LO I used it on.

That's a great idea to do the cards that way! I have a family recipe book Mom put together several years ago when my sister got married. It's simply word processed, but I've wanted to put them into a recipe album for a while now. Never did it because I didn't want to be worreid about the album getting messed up. Doing the cards like that would solve the problem! Great idea! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

EEEEKKK!! Another enabler of a different kind!! LOL!

I got hooked in the recipe swaps THANKS to Sabrina and have several of them now. I have one heck of a collection of personal recipes I have collected over the years as well as from mama that I treasure. I bought a recipe specific cookbook binder a few years ago and can not find time to put anything in it, let alone pictures in albums!!

GAAK!! Thanks Robert for the great idea and something else I guess I can put in to power lo's or pages of some sort to work on a little at a time!

80 for 06 2 cards
