OT: I got wheels

To give you a bit of background.... our car lost reverse gear about a month before xmas, we've had several quotes to have it repaired, and the cheapest was $1400. I had been able to drive it around to some places, just had to be careful where I parked to ensure that I could drive out. Plus, the registration expired last wednesday. So with the repairs plus rego, we were looking at in excess of $2300. Just after xmas? I don't think so! LOL Today DH and I were driving (in his work car) and we spotted a little bomb on the side of the road. We stopped to check it out, and it has 9mths+ rego and is an automatic.... DH rang the number on the car and a guy came out to meet us. The advertised price was $900, well both DH and I thought we'd talk him down considerably. Anyhow, to cut a long story short... we got the car for $300!!! I couldn't believe our luck... I truly am the "haggling queen" LOL. DH asked me to do the haggling, as he knows that I (more often than not) get a good deal. I'm so happy, now I have a little "shaker box" to get around in while DH is at work. I can take Tim to the lake, or go to the shops or whatever... it's nice to be mobile again. luv Cec...xxx

Wow Cec! What a deal! Good on you! I'm the worst at bargaining, always leave that to my DH. Have fun driving your little shaker box!

The secret to haggling is you have to let the other person think that you don't "need" whatever it is you're trying to buy, also, you have to be prepared to walk away if they don't come to the party with what you want to spend. So, sometimes you might not win, but stick to your guns and more often than not, you will.

There you go, you just got free tips from the queen of haggles!! LOL. luv Cec...xxx

LOL..... Oh Sabrina, if only you were DOWN here, or I were UP there, I'd love to take you shopping!! Thanks a bunch! I'm going to give the car a tub today, then should take some pics and do a LO of my bargain.... LOL, that would be too funny. luv Cec...xxx

Yeah Cec so glad you found some wheels. Calling it a "shaker box" makes me imagine you driving around and you're sitting there in a bunch of bead shaking around and clunking you in the head as you turn corners. teehee

LOL, Lynne..... DH was hysterical yesterday when we were driving it and I called it my "shaker box"... he said, "Hey, isn't that something you make to put on your pages?" laughing, I said "yes"... the back doors of the car shake, rattle and roll when I go over a bump, and the paintwork is a bit patchy, so I thought Shaker Box was an appropriate name! After I give it a good clean, I'll take some pics of it to share.... luv Cec...xxx

LOL! Cec, I can just picture WHAT kind of car you are rattling around in and to call it a shaker box is too funny.

It reminds of the GI pass me around cars in Germany. They were so expensive there that that was more often than not the only way to get anything to drive yourself Boy what memories and I had a couple too!!

Opels were the most reliable and the pass me arounds that ate holes in your pockets were ole Mercedes and those boxy BMW's. VW's were treasured as they were very reliable too! You could also get ugly ole French cars, but you could not give those suckers away. Citroens come to mind first then Puegeots - LOL!!

Way to go Cec!! I never can find a running car anywhere nearly that cheap. Saved money over repairing and retagging for sure.

OOOOHHH RJ, forgot all about them. Irregardless French cars were all ugly, broke down a lot and you wouldn't take one for FREE!!!

Like Yugo's we had here in mid 80's, Ford Pinto's and Chevy Vega's. Boy talk about awful memories, WHO BROUGHT THIS SUBJECT UP - LOL!!!

My husband hates when I try to bargain with someone. I think it's fun. Wow

300 is alot better than 2300. I'd be so lost if I didn't have wheels to get out and about. I would feel trapped.

Wow! What a deal! Congrats on the new (at least for you) car! I can't haggle at all. LOL We had one car for several years. When I wasn't working, it wasn't too bad. Then I started working full-time, and did that for about 1 1/2 years. That was the longest 1 1/2 years of my life! LOL I worked closer to the daycare than DH did, so we would take DD to daycare, I would run DH to work, then go to work myself. It got even crazier the days that he had to make a day-trip for work and had to have that car! Now I've gotten spoiled with us having two vechicles. LOL

Concrats, I'm glad you finally got a car again that moves in both directions! I can imagine that it might be a little stressful driving in one that couldn't reverse!

Thanks Deb, I hear what you're saying about sharing a vehicle, and it's a pain in the "you know what". It's much easier to have 2 vehicles, everyone is happy :) luv Cec...xxx
