OT: Prayers needed

Yesterday morning I had to take DH to the hospital because his cold/flu which he has been fighting for the last two weeks set off an acute pancreatitis attack. We've dealt with this for the last four years, but he has been doing great for about a year now with only an occasional small 2-3 day bout. We've been able to handle things so far. The kids are getting used to him being in the hospital for a couple of days every 6-8 months. I called him this morning to see how he was doing and he gave the phone to the nurse because the hospital won't listen to him when he said he didn't want a certain doctor on his case. She said they were going to call in a kidney specialist because they think his kidneys might be getting ready to shut down. I let her know first off that we refuse to deal with this doctor (bad part is he is the only kidney specialist in town) and if DH's kidneys shut down I want him transferred to another hospital. We knew this day might come as he has been functioning with 48% use for the last 15 years. They told us back then he would be on dialysis in five years. I need help with this one....your thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated. Sandy

Sandy,

I'll say a prayer for him and you make sure that you stick to your position and don't let the hospital tell you that you can't transfer him or get your own doctor. They think that most people will just go along with whatever they tell you. You have to be an advocate for him and make sure that you know that they have to do what you tell them.

If you don't like what the nurse is saying, go over her head, go to the hospital director if you have to. We've been doing this for my grandmother and it's been working. They don't like it but that's too bad. You're talking about his life and that's more important than their pride.

Good luck!

I hope you all come through this relatively unscaved! You have the right to deal or not deal with any doctor you wish! You and your son need to feel comfortable with who you depend on for good health! Barb:o)

Hi Sandy I'm sorry you have to deal with hospital and town politics! We are in that position often becaus e of my daughters disease and our need to use a local hospital for some things and the childrens hospital for others...unfortunately! One time a friend reminded me that the hospital, the doctors, all of them are your employees when you are the one paying their salaries. So be the boss, stand up for what you want and if need be, fire them and move on to another place. Your husband can simply walk out, as painful as it may be, to your waiting car and go to another hospital of your choice. It would be great if it didn't come to that, but hospital politics can be fierce and the only one who truly, 100% advocates for yourself or your family is you. Be strong, Jodi

Prayers going up. My father and sister had kidney problems for many years, and did the whole dialysis thing. I'll be praying that God will be with your doctors, nurses, and caretakers as they deal with your DH.

Your DH and family are in thoughts and prayers. I know how scary this can be for you. My Dh has kidney troubles also he did years on dialysis and finally a few years ago we lucked out with a kidney transplant. Even after the transplant it was all roses. Stick your ground, do not give in. I had many arguements with the dr. and nurses. They will try to walk over you until they see that you stand your ground. If no one listens to you take it above their heads. Don't stop until you are satisfied with the care your DH is getting. If you need to talk I'm here for you.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts, prayers and words of encouragement. I was finally able to bring DH home on Friday afternoon. His kidney function has dropped another 10% but are still working. Once they changed the pain medication and he was able to relax and finally sleep it helped so much. This was the worst bout of pancreatitis he has had since the first one. He is still weak and cold all of the time......lost fifteen pounds, and is still not on solid foods yet. In spite of all of that, he looks and feels much better than he did on last Monday morning. Now, if I can only keep him from trying to do too much to soon and get rested up Sandy
