OT: Upadate on Son @ Basic training

DS #1 finished Basic training with a few bumps and bruises. He still has a deep bruise on his thigh from where a Drill Instructor kicked him. DS pulled the pin on a live grenade and released the safety lever for a second (aka "milked the grenade"). I told him better a bad bruise than being scrapped off the sides of the bunker where the live weapons training was going on! LOL He lost several teeth during hand to hand combat training......DS is now at AIT, same place as Basic. He graduates the middle of November. He and his girlfriend have set the 23rd of November as their wedding date. DS will be home for 24 days then he ships to S. Korea for 1 year. He will be able to come home mid-way through his tour to visit. His girlfriend/wife will continue to stay with us. This will allow them to save money so when they do get a stateside assignment they will have a better start on their new life together. I'm sad for them as they will be seperated but know they will survive and at least he isn't being deployed to Iraq yet. That is a HUGE relief.

I am exhausted from trying to help Melissa with getting her things from her Mother's house. Things have gone pretty good with her Mother,up until yesterday when the kids set the date. Her mother went ballistic. DS called her to tell her the date and the plans. She flew off the handle at him telling him that I had taken over as Melissa's mother, just pushed her aside. DS told her that if she wasn't such an unfit mother, and had done a better job that someone else wouldn't have had to step in. He wouldn't tell me what else he told her. He did tell Melissa and all she'd tell me is that DS defended me a great deal and pretty much told her how the cow eats the cabbage. I am tired of being nice to this woman, but I will play it by ear next time I see her. I just hope that we don't have to see her much more. Okay, I'll stop venting now.

Hi

I'm glad your son is surviving basic training and that the stunt he pulled with the grenade only caused him to have a deep bruise and that he could hold onto the grenade when his superior officer kicked him hard.

I'm surprised that there isn't any "married recruits" housing at the South Korea base he will be stationed at. When my Uncle served (ok back in the mid 60's) he and my Aunt stayed in housing because they were newlyweds. It might be somehting he should look into.

As far as your future "in Law" I'd go to court and petition the courts for help especially since she is harrassing you and causing you "fear and alarm."

I still wish you strength and peace during this time. Hugs Kate

Sure glad a bad bruise was the worst that happened to him after what he did. I bet he'll never do that again.

That seems needless. Why can't they issue them the same type of mouth guard that some athletes use? Oh, right. This is the government. They're not supposed to make sense (I grew up around a lot of government employees & their families & worked for the govt for 3 years.)

Sure hope all works out eventually & that Melissa's mom realizes you have Melissa's best interests at heart.

:::wishing she & your son all the best in their marriage & him a safe career in the military:::

Alicia

Thanks for the update Kenda. Enjoyed reading about your goings on even though they've been very trying for you all. My brother lost a tooth in basic training... lost meaning it got cracked from being hit in the mouth and he had to have a root canal.

Hoping you get some rest and things start to ease up and become more pleasant.

Hugs, Lynne

Aloha Kenda, I am glad to hear your DS is doing well and some missing teeth and bruises is all he has. It sounds like you have a terrific son :) and I can tell you are very proud. I am sorry that the MIL is being so horrible. I do hope everything works out and she realizes that her daughter is getting the best life possible. Be sure to take some time to yourself and just relax!

~Crystal

Thanks for the update Kenda :o) Sounds like DS #1 has learnt some tough lessons in Basic Training but they will stand him in good stead for his future in the military. My congratulations to him and Melissa on their forthcoming marriage :o)

You sound a little frazzled but I have to admire your patience with Melissa's mom. She should be showing gratitude for all that you are doing for her daughter...not being awkward and obstructive. Good luck with your continuing role in Melissa's advancement and feel proud that you are providing some stability in her life. Take care, Marilyn

Wow! Basic training really was rought on him! I am so glad that he is going to Korea as his first posting! I wish him well on his wedding and think your doing so much for Melissa so that they can have a better base for their wedded life is awesome!

Hugs, M-C

Hi Kenda! I am glad to hear your DS is finished with Basic training, even though it sounds like they were awfully brutal to him! I'll bet he won't milk a grenade again! Melissa is very lucky to have you for some stability in her life. I hope things work out for the best with her and her mother too. It cant be easy for either one of them. Good luck on getting her settled in and I wish them both good luck in their life together.

Linda

I'm glad to hear DS1 is off to a rip-roaring start. :-) I'm sure he won't play with grenades anymore, though! Better a bruised thigh then what could have happened. Definately a "What were you thinking?" moment. LOL I am so glad Melissa has you in her life. Just be patient. Remember, you have 18 years worth of negative programming to de-program.

LOL Kate, DS said that he'll never "milk" another grenade again....which was the point of getting kicked so hard. As far as his tour of duty in Korea, it's unaccompanied so he can't have her there. The "in law", well we're just playing by ear and she knows she's on my list so she's watching it. I did tell her that if she creates any problems for us then I'll take care of it, and I'm not afraid to take it to court. That stopped her in her tracks.

Thank you for the well wishes Kate

You are so right Alicia, he did say he'd never do that again! LOL As far as losing the teeth, well he had a crown on one of his front teeth that we'd had problems with when he lived at home and was forever coming off, then the one next to it was knocked out so hopefully they'll give him a permanent bridge then he won't have to worry about it. I'm not counting on Melissa's Mom figuring things out, she's just got no clue. It's like Melissa was just in the way and a nucience. Too sad. Thank you for the well wishes, I'll pass them along.

Apparently tooth loss is a very common thing at basic. Lots of guys I've talked to have lost teeth at basic. lol Things are starting to settle in around here and I'm feeling less stressed, thanks to Deb being back and me being able to talk to her! Thanks Deb!!!!

I am taking some time to myself Crystal. I decided that I had to, just so I can continue to help guide Melissa. yes, I am very proud of DS, can you tell? LOL

Yes, DS did learn some tough lessons but he says that when/where he messed up he will never mess up like that again. That's a good thing, better to learn these tough lessons in basic than on the battle feild where he could lose his life.

I am frazzled but I took the time to sit down and figure out what was making me frazzled. Once I figured that out I am taking the steps to correct it.

Several years ago I would not have been so patient with Melissa's Mom, but this is the kinder, gentler Kenda. LOL But I won't be so kind once Melissa has all of her things from her Mom's house. I will then be less kind when I talk to her. I won't be hateful but I'll tell her like it is. At least Melissa is starting to feel better about herself and is starting to get some self esteem.

LOL I do need the well wishes for the future inlaw.

LOL Yes, it was rough on him! But he loved every minute of it, said he'd do it again. I think that he is releived to get the tour out of the way since it's unaccompanied. I so hope that I am doing the right thing for Melissa.

Linda, Basic was tough on him because sometimes he just doesn't think, though I think that he's over that, at least when he has a grenade in his hand! LOL I sometimes have to struggle to not put down Melissa's mother around her but I don't want to be the reason for the lack of a relationship between the two of them.

LOL He will at least pay more attention when he as a grenade in his hands! You are so right about the 18 years of negative programing. I can't tell you how much better I felt after our talk yesterday! Thank you so much!! I was able to sit down with DH last night and talk about some of what I was feeling. He said alot of the same things that you said. It was kinda scary! LOL
