Shannon, I'm the mom of four preemie babies. The first was 8 weeks early and weighed in at 3lb 7 oz and was given until morning to live. He was born at 2 a.m., and morning was just hours away. He is 26 years old today! My second baby was 10 weeks premature and weighed 3lbs 8 oz and he is now 23 years old. While having a preemie has to be the scariest thing on the planet, I'm sure the doctors at the hospital will do everything in their power to ensure the baby is just fine. It's totally amazing how strong and tough these tiny little creatures are. When they feel the love of their mother and father it gives them all the willpower in the world to hang in there, they want more. Tell your sister I'm thinking about her and to just stay with the baby in the NICU as much as she can, holding his hand, rubbing his cheeks and talking to him. He'll know it's her and he'll thrive on the love she gives him. (or her?) I know she's scared, I was too. I'm thinking about her and the baby and do hope all goes well!

I was a 2-month preemie born at 3 1/2 lbs. I'm fine, & um, a little older than

  1. And methods of caring for early preemies have come a long way since the "dark ages" when I was a preemie.

You sound like a fantastic Mom, Cleo. I'm so glad things worked out for you all those years ago. The Creator sure moves in mysterious ways...

I have a grandson born at 26 weeks and weighing 2 lb. 4 oz. To complicate matters he also had spina bifida. He was in the hospital 11 weeks and when he came home the doctors still did not expect him to live. He will be 16 in March, is an honor student and an athlete, active in sports for people with disabilities. We call him our miracle. Many people all over the country were praying for him. I will be praying for your sister and her baby. Peggy in NJ
