Yes you would loosen the 2 screws on the hook drive gear and make adjustments to the hook. The needle bar height must also be correct for these adjustments for be effective. Perhaps you should box it up and bring it to your local friendly sewing machine repair person before you make even more expensive to repair.

After following this thread for quite some time, I'll conclude that you are not going to intuitively "figure it out". If you insist on trying to fix it yourself, at least buy the shop/service manual in Danish so that you can understand the machine and then attempt the repair, or better yet, bring it to an Elna service station and have them do it for you.

we already did - but they offered my wife a new - cheap - machine instead which she bought because they claimed that it was to expensive to repair this old elna (they would have about 200$ for it) but it is more a challenge now to get this fine old elna back in a god shape because to me it did'nt look as anything where worn nor broken - but since it is the first time I have disassembled a sewing machine it takes a bit longer than expected
If that is Danish Krone 200 then that works out to about $40.00 US and that is inexpensive by any standard. The more you mess it up the more expensive it gets to repair it in the end. It does sound like one of the usual dealers these days that wants to sell machines and not repair them. It sounds like a simple repair to a trained repair professional. Just not as much profit in a repair as selling you a new machine.
I suspect the real reason the shop claimed it was too expensive was becasue they did not want to, or did not know how to, repair it. That had happened to me in the past...I ended up fixing the machine myself. Do you have another shop you can try?
You might consider joining the yahoo group "wefixit" -- with luck, "Elnaman" may be reading and can help you. He's a "retired" repairman who teaches beginning and intermediate repair classes now.
nope - as I wrote it was in dollars - I didn't expect that someone over there know our local currency - and since we are not talking about rocket science here but just a matter of timing this correctly it sounds a bit expensive to me. The only problem left is to find the correct way to adjust the timing on this 30 year old elna but since it probably is the belt drive which has "jumped" a few steps I'll try there.
