Benjarmins best bowl gouge

I've been using these for years and like them, but a few folks bought them recently and didn't like the cut, flute, etc..

Just got my package today with 2 more and noticed that the sharpen them now..

Mine came with a fairly swept back grind.. they used to come pretty much flat tipped and you had to grind whatever edge you wanted on them..

Not sure, but that could be a reason for the displeasure, if folks don't usually use a swept back grind..

IMHO, they're a great value at $20 and I'll keep using them..

Mac, You really should try one of the Thompson gouges. They are one of the 'lasts 5 times longer' tool steel that really does last a lot longer. They aren't cheap, and you have to make your own handles, but they cut so nicely.

Hey Mac! I order three different sets of the tools on your suggestion back in November, and all of them came in already shaped. They all had a pretty good edge right out of the box. I bought a spindle master also to round out the set.

Have a good one Lee

I don't weight my handles. I do have 2 of the Glaser gouges that have the shot filled handles, and for me, I don't think there is any advantage. Some complain about the cold aluminum handles, but I haven't really noticed that. I do prefer big and heavy tools, they just feel more comfortable in my hands. I do tend to reach out over the tool rest up to 3 or maybe more inches, and having a longer handle, and heavy tools is an advantage (leverage) here. I saw one demonstrator who used aluminum tubing for handles that were very light, and he always kept the tool rest very close to his work. My prefered gouge is a 5/8 (outside diameter) with an 18 inch long and 1

Maybe someday when I can take better care of my tools, Reed..

Right now, between daily use and packing them to shows a lot, they get pretty beat up.. and I'm too lazy to make handles.. My 2 favorite Oland tools are bolts with lots of duct tape wrapped for handles.. lol

Yeah, I was surprised.. the bowl gouge used to come with a flat "U" end..

I got 2 bowl gouges, a 1" roughing gouge and an oval skew yesterday and all I had to do was a little honing..

I like a heavy tool, but throughout, not just the handle..

I make most of my tools out of 3/4" bolts and like the weight of them..

My wife picked my up some cheap bolts and they were so light I wouldn't use them..
