Try doing a search, either on-line or at the library, for "macramé".

Hi Gary, My dad use to do this type of thing but he called it macramae. Maybe if you search for instruction for macramae rather than braiding you'll have better luck.

Try a search for 'ornamental knots'.
Get 'The Ashley Book of Knots'. It's fun to read even if you don't tie any of the knots. Your wife can start with some simple turksheads and work up from there.

Do a search for Tandy leather, they will have books on braiding. Might also be called plaiting. at least they did in the 70's.
You can also look at leather lacing or stiching. There ar many lacing stiches that can bee used to adorn your work. There may be an outlet near you:
