General 12" lathe - questions

Hello, I am not a woodturner (yet) but I am getting very interested in the craft for which I have been lurking in this NG for few weeks now. There will be an auction of a bankrupt business in my town and one of the items being auctioned is a "General 160, 12" swing" no sub model# is given. I will not have an opportunity to actually see the item until few hours before the auction starts. Here are my questions: what should I be paying particular attention to when inspecting this lathe? Is this a good lathe for a complete neophyte like myself? is it a good lathe, period? The lathe was used by a mid size kitchen cabinet making business, so I assume it has seen its share of spindles being turned on it, having that in mind, assuming good working conditions, how much should I set the top ceiling of my bidding at?. BTW, I understand there are many variables that can affect that $$ ceiling, but pls make assumptions, give me some $$ figures, I am totally clueless as to prices of second hand woodworking devices. Many thanks.

I forgot to mention that I am mainly interested in getting into bowl turning.

Guillermo,

Yes, there are a lot of variables. How old is the lathe? Although for this particular model, I don't believe there have been many upgrades added or improvements made to the lathe. Turn it on, dial the speed slowly, feel for slop in the dial wheel (you'll know it if it's there), feel if it changes speed smoothly, any accessories; ex. face plate, extra tool rest, etc.

As far as the price, well, you have to decide what will make you happy to own the machine. I wouldn't spend more than I could very comfortably afford because there are better models available, albeit for more money, but worth more, too. As to sub model #, 160-2 has a dial to change speed from 500 - 3000 rpm; I'm not familiar with any of the other General models.

Is it a good lathe? Yes, for spindle turning. I support myself with lathe work and 3/4 of that is reproduction spindle work so this lathe has served me well. If you start turning bowls, really like it, in no time you'll be wishing for a better lathe. (*aside to Lyn; "oh, if Donald Watland could hear me now!" )

Good Luck and have fun......bidding and turning.
