Reyd, Looking at Dave's pics I think you could easily scrape the bed ways flat enough for government turning work.

OTOH, I think you should make the parts of Dave's machine into something personal, unique and really special instead just another older lightweight spindle lathe. Maybe make a 'Conover type' lathe with beautiful stained hardwood ways sporting carved and embellished sides and enameled castings? Even look in junkyards for an old commercial sewing machine motor with a integral clutch? Maybe mount the headstock on a painted hardwood or concrete block to make a dedicated 'platter' lathe? Maybe you can use Dave's gift to invent a 'beyond the Shopsmith' multi-use machine: the "Reydsmith" Whatever you decide, the the turning world is your oyster. Go for it Reyd! Arch

its not the flatness thats the problem, its the difference between the two of them:) that seems to be harder to fix according to the metal teacher.
