Magnetic tools

Since buying a new Nova DVR my tools are becoming magnetic. My skew chisel is the worst and it causes it to drag on the toolrest, if I present it to the rest without a firm grip it is attracted to the rest with enough force to catch the work. Is this a common problem? Could I be storing my tools too close to the headstock? Can you demagnatise them?

Thanks

Well, you _can_ demagnetize them by stroking with a magnet in the proper directions, or passing them through a device such as

but hey, I think theproper place for a tool is on the rest. I'll politely doubt that magnetismis more influential that a nick in the rest, or a sharp edge on the tool, though. I use magnetic tool holders.

My hassle with magnetized tools is getting swarf and grinding dust off the edges. Worse than keeping squirrels off bird feeders.

A 22 works wonders for the squirrels -- maybe it would also work for the swarf and grinding dust?

Hi Arch

We used a bituminous material, something like a soft asphalt or non runny roofing tar, stick your screwdriver tips or cutting tools into that and the fine metal swarf gets stuck into the tar, end of problem.

Gotta agree with George here. My tools are magnatized because I hold them on the wall with one of those magnet tool holder jobbies. On the smaller skew or gouge it is noticable but not problematic. I'd suggest filing the top of your rest to get any nicks out, then rubbing a candle on it to wax it up a bit for easy sliding. Works a treat.

If the tools already on the rest it's not going to catch due to that. If you're cutting the wood off the rest, I hope you're wearing a good face mask and aren't turning an expensive exotic...
