making tool tips

Dec 25, 2004 2 Replies

Hallo I would like to get hold of some tool blanks to have a go at making my own chisels etc. I can't seem to find the blanks any where ! Does any one have any web sites of the grade of metal needed. I'm based in the UK. Thanks Dave

Contact a local steel or tool and die manufacturer/supplier - they usually have off-cuts or even full chunks of flat or bar stock that would be great for making tools - be sure to ask for High Speed Steel or M-2. If you are armed with a few questions when you call the steel suppliers will usually try to help you make the right selection of steel.

As above, but also consider machine tool suppliers such as J & L Industrial or Production Tool in many cities in the USA. They usually have smaller rectangular stock in 3' lengths. You can also use O1 and A1, A2 steel as these are easy to harden at home.
