Musing about obnoxious threads

Rcw seems to be going through another cycle of obnoxious outside interference from sprayed ng threads, vulgar posts, and inappropriate advertisements. They are always with a ng, but this is no more reason to get upset and leave rcw than to get upset and leave my hometown because of the local media's incessant repetition of local crime. Far too many good people for me to leave either.

These aggravations aren't very well camouflaged and are generally easy to avoid until the cycle changes. As easy to avoid as the pop-ups, flashing ads, and multiple departments on other forums. That is if I truly want to avoid them. If I read these obvious threads to satisfy my curiosity or get some sort of satisfaction, I shouldn't be, or pretend to be, scandalized by the content. At least, that's the way I see it. What's your view?

I read these obvious threads to satisfy my

They get all the attention they deserve from me.

Nothing.

It was irritating though, when one of those wingnuts was posting 60-80 messages a day as I was missing posts I wanted to read. But that was the sheer volume of material, not the content of the messages. I read one or two years ago, then when I found it was possible to embed viruses and malware in some NG messages on some servers, I have never clicked on one since that I can remember.

I'm one who left rec.woodworking simply because of the incessant responding by regulars to inflamatory posts. The problem there was the constant changing of topics by both regulars and the trolls required me to start blocking people and that included regulars. It was the only to manage the huge volume there and the result was a ridiculously huge kill file that didn't allow much to download making visiting there a waste. Here it isn't so bad so I simply ignore threads and block the troll and worst offenders of the regulars. Works OK but I see our troll decided to modify his address just slightly so one of his posts just came through. Block sender and he's back into oblivion again until he changes it again.

But as I've said before, if we just ignored trolls and hit block sender they would disappear. We don't see him until one of our regulars has to respond. But if they would not do so, the troll quickly figures out that it's no fun to go scream at people if they don't scream back at you.

I am not scandalized by much of anything. I get annoyed by the constant arguing with the trolls. What bothers me gets ignored until it becomes annoying and then I filter if it continues to show up. Then the regulars make the kill file too. And when it gets too quiet around here like it did with rec.woodworking, I unsubscribe and go on. Like I have also said before, 99% of the problem with trolls is not the troll but the outraged regulars who can't shut up and clog things up worse than the troll giving him the great satisfaction of knowing he has succeedied in his goal. And it's these regulars who run people off.

Hi Arch

As I have said before, don't read and there is no need to reply, these post are so obvious, they do want attention, and if they don't get any they will leave.

How and what is everybody doing lately, it's kind of quiet on the rec lately, is it to hot or are we all enjoying summer, as for Me I have been a very busy beaver, I have roughed out more than 75 bowls and platters the last couple of weeks. Yes there is a good reason for this, had a lot of wood in my shop already (as usually) and ran into a large American Elm log, not literally of course, it was well over 3 feet D. but had to give up the butt end to a fire wood maker, I did get a load of very nice large pieces though, and it is all cut up and rough turned. However that weekend we went to visit my best friend and while we were there he asked if I wanted any black walnut, as it turned out they had cut a few walnut veneer logs and all the wood that was not veneer was left, like all the branch wood but also the trunk parts that had some damage, DO I WANT ANY, YES I DO. Anyway 3 days of cutting and dragging wood out of a wet gully and I have a BIG problem, where am I going to store all this, there already was NO room in the shop and I had 3 loads of wood to store, well I was a little bit a bad boy, covered the floor in a downstairs bedroom that has a entrance door in the back of our house and got all the wood sealed and out of harms way. Now it was waiting when (not if) MLOML was going to discover the treasure, and than. Bit more than a week later I was told it had to leave as soon as possible, Whew, that I can live with. I am reminded daily that the wood has to go, yes dear I'm making room. Is this a gloat ??? well OK maybe it is, so now you know why I'm very busy. (and the troll doesn't bother me in the least)

The deterioration in NG postings, both here and on other NGs is one of the reasons I've not bothered to either read or contribute for the past

8+ months.

Accepting that I instituted some of this behaviour in Jan 2005(?) I am finding the level of vitriol increasingly wearying, pathetic and always unnecessary.

As mentioned above, this is not restricted to this group, I see it across other areaas I am interested in. A symptom of people with too much time on their hands perhaps and also with a predeliction for baiting / inflammatory remarks made whilst hiding behind the anonymity of email addresses.

Well that's me done for another 4 or so months until I pop back on merely to advise of the website update and who we have added.

Arch - if you are reading this (and I hope you are) I rest my case!

Makes me wonder sometimes why we take the time and effort to search out new talent - certainly makes me think that posting here is a waste of time. If that was your objective EBD - or whoever you are hiding behind the addy - then congrats.

Then again - and just to irritate you - perhaps some real reasoned argument would not go amiss.

Moderated NGs would appear to be the way to go for those here who don't appreciate this sort of flippancy and there are some good alternatives around.

Then again, why should people like EBD ruin it for others?

Hi Jonathon, Many thanks for joining in. Needless to say, I wish it would be more often. We endlessly post about what influences buyers and collectors and how we can get started toward gaining some modicum of recognition as craftsman-- artists. Your different approach as a well known collector-patron and your ability to recognize budding as well as established talent would be a real contribution and help to elevate the ng.

When a bit discouraged, most of us take refuge in "I don't care what others think" and sometimes we salve our egos with abrasive posts. Recognition is a universal satisfaction and nobody really turns just for himself. Not many narcissists here. As for moderated forums; they are of course, placid and very worthwhile, but they do tend toward becoming a 'vanilla smoothie'. It's a thin line between courteous and cloying. I'm reminded of the old quote; "You don't get harmony by everyone singing the same note".

With Ralph, I look forward to your updates and thank you for your continued support of fine woodturning. Warm regards, Arch
