You may expect to see Clint Eastwood riding up one day, wearing a serape and smoking the little cigarillo. Looks like it's going to be quite the casa when it's finished (where's the gulf by the way?). Regards, Hank

Well, I'm bringing a lot of wood with me and Chuck says that he'll continue his care packages...

Also, I met a really cool couple this trip that are into sand rails and he said that there's desert ironwood laying around where they go play in the sand... you're allowed to take whatever is down but not cut or even trim living stuff... it's part of a preserve..

I have heard several folks mention mesquite in the area but I haven't seen any yet..

Well, better him than dirty harry, I guess... *g*

The Gulf of California / Sea of Cortez is what you see from the front windows of the shop... about 3 miles away... The view of the Sea from the roof is spectacular.... most folks down there spend a lot of time on the roof, catching the "ocean" breeze....... That's why the shop has lots of big windows, and the house is facing the water..

Ah yes, Mesquite is nice, especially for those pens you've mentioned. Polishes great!

For sure... I've done a few pens with the local mesquite here and you just sand it and run it through the buffer... no finish needed..

The bad side is that all the mesquite I've foraged in Central Calif. is red on the outside but the wood is mostly white.. hoping the stuff in Baja is that nice pink or reddish color... Mac

Hi Mac

Hope you don't have any Tsunamis up there, doesn't seem to much out there to stop it, yea I know I'm jealous, but what are the hitching posts for, ?? keep the horses on the roof ??? :>))) Starting to look really sharp.

I'd drop by and bring some wood with me, if it wasn't so damn farrrr.

Have fun and take care Leo Van Der Loo

Boy, if it weren't for the fact that you're moving to mesquite country, I'd be tempted to send you a pen blank from the stuff I've got. It's a nice dark red with purple and black streaks all the way through- I didn't even know the wood could be white...

Don't think so, but the tidal change is like the 2nd or 3rd "longest" in the world, supposedly..

When the tide goes out it exposes MILES of beach because there is very little slope to the floor of the Sea, I guess...\It's pretty dramatic..

Those bugly logs on the neighbors are to keep his grand kids from falling off the roof.. Knowing kids, they'll love climbing on the cool toys and have a few feet farther to fall now... I told the guy (he's a friend from our town) that he needs an 8' tall eagle perched on one of the logs, or a 500 pound canary..

Hey, the most it can be is half a world away.... pick a direction!

Wow... sounds like beautiful wood! I'll post a pic or 2 of the mesquite pens at ABPW... Mac

I'll go out on a limb and predict that it should dry rather well there.

Actually, Max, I've learned that in hot weather (like we have in Central CA) drying is a big problem...

We don't have nice, cool basements like other parts of the country so wood tends to dry much too quickly... I've double bagged, used chips and sawdust, etc... still best to dry things in what we call winter here and avoid trying to dry bowls and things in the summer..

I've just evolved into a "turn 'em green, thin and let them warp" style...

That's pretty much what I was implying, if perhaps unclearly. I have enough trouble drying rough bowls here in the humid Midwest. I can only imagine the problems you'll have on the peninsula.

I've motorcycled through the peninsula, and I recall how hot it was in the summer but how little sweat seemed to appear on my skin. Good luck.

We're from freakin' Fresno... it was in the high 90's here and the high 80's in Baja over Memorial Day weekend.. And at least in Baja we get the breeze at night... it just stays the same temperastire at night in Fresno.. Mac

We camped about three nights out of four, and I recall that it was comfortable every single night provided there was an offshore breeze. But it was really dry. We carried a lot of water, but generally found our way through it daily.

Please report as to how well your rough turnings desiccate in your new home. I'm curious.
