Segmented bowls on an angle ...

Hi Folks...



Me and a friend have been wondering about turning bowls constructed not by the normal means of segmenting (building up rings then building vertically) but by cutting compound angled segments to enable the wall of the bowl to take the approximate shape proir to turning. For those of you who cannot fathom my pathetic explaination,just think of a wooden barrel with the staves splayed out and flattened, from the top towards the bottom. (Methinks that just confused everybody)



So does anyone have a chart or spreadsheet with the formulae for calculating the angles/lengths etc already worked out??? (If not why not!!!!!) and can I have a copy please...please ... I have had enough of sines / cosines / angles / No of segs / slope angle etc etc etc etc etc .......... HELP!!!!



Why do we want to do this???? simple really, ... 'cos we do!!!,... Besides, why not.

Instructions come with, thoughthere are also a lot of places under a search for "segmented turning" whichlist angles and jigs, should you wish to work without the interlock the bitsgive. For assembly, recommend some pinch dogs, as your spouse may not tolerate the kind of language an individual with two hands available and six hands worth of work can deliver.

I have a downloadable calculator program on my site which allows the calculation of the proper miter and taper angles for polygons from 3-16 sides and with various slopes from 0-60 degrees. This might be close to what you want and it certainly is more flexible than any table I've seen. The program runs in every version of Windoze I've tried and is free.

Ok, it sounds like you are wanting to do some staved work. Others have already responded with suggestions such as compound angle cuts, and the old (tried and true) standby of just making the rings a bit wider and cutting away the excess.

Nobody has mentioned gluing at all, and I can't help but insert my own comment.

When you are doing any sort of turning involving glued up wood, make sure all of the glue joints have the wood grain going in approximately the same direction. If you don't, the bowl will self destruct. Maybe not right away, but eventually you will have glue joint failure due to differential expansion of the wood as the moisture content of the wood changes. If you are making a bowl with grain horizontal, then the individual pieces in a ring will be end glued, and each ring will have parallel grain. If you are doing a staved bowl, all of the wood should be vertical grain (relative to the table it will sit on). Putting anything in at right angles is definitely a recipe for disaster. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but given a bit of time and some moisture cycles, the bowl _will_ come apart wherever the grain is at odds with it's neighbor....

What can I say, Thanks everyone, all comments and suggestions have been noted and inwardly digested. WoodturnerPro is looking to be the Dog's Dangling Bits. Avoiding a 'CrossGrain' situation has been thought about but I have wondered about veneer inserts ... any thoughts? Also Glue ... Titebond II OK ?

Use all the veneer you like. You won't have a problem regardless of orientation. TB2 works just fine.
