Top ideas.

I've really been ito tops recently.Mainly the little colorful hand tops with chatter marks like Bonnie Kline does. I'm going to do a demo for my daughters pre K class in two weeks and I'm going to make those for all the kids.Anyway I'm really likeing these tops.It brings out the kid in every adult who sees them. Anybody know of any web sites that have pictures of different styles and shapes of tops?I'm looking for new ideas.

The American Woodturner mag had its front cover with nothing but tops, probably 6 months ago! Lewis

's basically a box where the top is a spinning top. You turn the boxupside down and spin the top on the base. It's a children's game with the 4symbols around the box side indicating the 'prize' you win or something likethat.

Those are incredible. Do you do all that carving by hand? It looks so precise. Great work.Where are you located?

Thanks for the comments. There's no hand carving. An ornamental lathe is used, in varying degrees, for most of them. I'm in Boring, OR (close to Portland).

Borinmg a dull place??? Yeah...I suppose it is. But...that's ok. But...in a lot of ways...it's possibly the best place in the world to live. Not scorching hot in the summer...not freezing cold in the winter.

30 miles from the mountains if you're into skiing & hiking. 60 miles to the coast if you like the beach. Lots of water if you're into boating (Columbia & Willamette rivers). 20 miles to Portland for "culture". A bike rider's paradise...can get to most places in the Portland area on a network of bike paths...there's one that goes from Portland all the way out to Boring.

And if one happens to be into woodturning, there are a couple of clubs...and lots of wood.
