An odd little task for the weekend...

Why take off the heavy flywheel, most all of those old stationary engines had big flywheels, very often two, they needed them, for the long stroke and low RPM, the regulators used on those engine could not handle the high fluctuations in engine speeds, and as workhorses on equipment you wanted steady RPM usually. It looks like there are a few pieces missing still and some modifications on the other ones you show. I have worked on some of those things, don't really miss it.

Because it was _too_ heavy. Look at the Webshots album - that thing is the size of the engine! Secondly this engine has disk cranks inside the crankcase and apparently runs OK without any external flywheel.

Maybe for the really old open-crank engines, but this one is a bit newer, smaller and higher reving than that. Huge flywheels were really needed for "hit and miss" governors that might run for several revolutions without firing.

Yes the open crank ones had enormous wheels sometimes, but I was referring to the smaller 4 to 8 hp engines build between 1920 and 1940 roughly, all those engines got hauled out of the corners after the end of WW II, lot of those where Lister, Deutz, Bernards etc, and had closed crankcases and mostly build in water cooler heads, except for the Bernards they had a radiator cooler and some also a belt driven fan. I don't have any pictures of them just memories, however I found a link to a stationary engines site that holds public expositions, yearly, it's close by where I grew up, some of the engines are of the kind I did repairs and maintenance on.
