Woodturning Design Magazine

Anyone here subscribe to this? Is it worth the money? I have emailed an address listed for R Becker on the website several days ago, but no response at all. I'm hoping that if I subscribe, the magazine is better than the communication. Did I just catch them at a bad time?

Thanks to all

Depends where you are, really. The initial issue is very well done, oriented IMO at readers who are beginning to intermediate skill level looking for "how to " type articles and project ideas. If that's what you want, and the quality level holds up, it's definitely worth the cost.

If you are looking for a beginners magazine.....subscribe away. If on the other hand you are looking for a woodturning "DESIGN" !!!! magazine then forget this one. Of course IMHO.........

Well...I have to disagree. It's pretty good, overall. Better than I expected. The "basket" article by Tom Crabb is certainly beyond the "beginner" level. IMO.

I've seen one issue........the first. Beginner............intermediate............ master woodturner...........its all a matter of opinion, depending on where YOU are in the craft. Of course, I'm somewhere in between "Rank Amateur and Master Woodturner". Some (most?) days I'm on the rank amateur end of the scale, other days I move up a notch or two.

I thought the magazine was a worthwhile read. Others may think this new magazine is a waste of time and money. New woodturning publications are pretty rare these days...........I wouldn't write this one off too quickly.

My local Wal-Mart store has the Woodturning Design magazine. Its a new publication by a crafts magazine publisher. I suspect Wal-Mart carries the crafts magazines of this publisher, and thus the Woodturning Design magazine also. I thought the magazine was good. As others said, it is project oriented. At least the first issue was. Lots of projects though. Almost like one of those article compilation books GWC in England puts together of past magazine articles.

Go to your local Wal-Mart and look at it. This would be a lot easier than writing emails and messages on internet forums. And far more productive since you can judge it yourself.

My wife got it for me as a christmas present and I've enjoyed it's first two issues. Since I'm a newbie it's laid out so that each issue has something for me to do now and something for me to work forward to do when my skill gets better.

Randy,

I think you should have read M.J. Orr's post more carefully. Especially the part that read If on the other hand you are looking for a woodturning "DESIGN" !!!! magazine then forget this one.. I wholeheartedly agree with M.J.Orr. By no stretch of the imagination could this be considered a design magazine. It is, quite simply, just another "projects" rag. For the price of a subscription you could pick up either Raffan's or Darlow's books that actually cover design.

Here's how to get in touch with the magazine's editor, a long-time woodturner, who I'm pretty sure will respond to your questions ASAP:

snipped-for-privacy@woodturningdesign.com Joe Herrmann

And, here's a link to the mag's website:

Just a follow up to everyone here. I got a response, and called a phone number that I was given to subscribe. I got the back issue(s) too. VERY good magazine, some of it basic stuff, much of it way over my head, and some of it I'm ready to dig into! I'd recommend it to anyone. I think anyone at any skill level should be able to find something of interest in each issue. If you don't, you aren't looking very hard!! Thanks for all the replies.
