Following my request for advices regarding woodturning videos, I got various replies regarding Bill Grumbine one: "Turned Bowls made easy". I therefore ordered it, and watched it yersteday :-)
Thanks for your advices to buy this one. I really enjoyed watching it and could not believe how fast the time passed...
By the way, I got the DVD from Bill pretty fast after having ordered (faster than some other wooturning DVDs I am still waiting for... but no fingerpointing...)
I like the concept of its video: 2h15 dedicated to turning a bowl. The bowl is classical (not any fancy shape) and it is the only bowl turned in the video. But the subject is very well and thoroughly detailed, while still being entertaining to watch !
IMHO, it is an excellent video: you go from log in the forest to the finished bowl. It explains very well each step involved, and is, I think, of great value for a beginner like me. Camera angles are nice, and allow you to really get a good view of what is happening. Bill shows explains each cut thoroughly from the gouge position to the body movement.
He also warns about typical pitfalls: what you will probably do wrong first time... and what results you can expect if you do wrong (exciting catch :-) most of the time...)
He also give some important safety recommendations, as well as valuable tips.
There was not any moment during the video, where I thought, well I would have liked to know why he does this, or how he holds that. You see all from various angles, and its commentary never let me wonder about anything.
The one problem I had with the video, is that after watching it I am just willing too go to one of its course asap....
