a *sweater/gansey* 'thread"

A jade green cardigan, knit in 4ply, one piece to the armholes, stocking stitch. It's going quite slowly because of that; but I just noticed that it's perfect project for taking to the cinema. As DH and I just decided we wantt to go to the cinema more, I foresee this cardigan actually getting finished some time :)

I also have a cranberry-red sweater with an owl on the front; I just need to make the second sleeve and sew up for that, it's size 2 for my curreently 18month old godson.

His mother, our daughter, rears various types of British rare breed rimitive sheep and spins the wool. But I'm not using that because I'm trying to use up the accumulated balls in my basket. So saying, I don't need a lesson in what to wear in a wet climate.

I don't need to be told any of that either. I've been knitting for more than sixty years.

The pattern was devised and the sweater is more than half done, despite yesterday being spent in a surgical theatre (on the table) and today being my birthday. I'm no slouch when it comes to knitting.

It would have been for me too but Spouse has decided that since he had an upgrade I should have one too - for my birthday (today). I suspect he couldn't think of anything original :-) So this morning he bought the bits for a machine I'm going to need a safety harness to drive. Nothing wrong with this one either, daft I call it. Still, there are always grandchildren to pass it on to.

Dear Mary,

When I first asked, you could have posted 4 paragraphs on how to knit a garment that would keep a person warm under challenging conditions. But, you did not. You could have saved me great expense and effort by just telling me how to knit warm fabrics and garments 6 years ago. You could have warned me that the knitting books and patterns and yarn bands recommendations are for garments designed to be worn in temperate environments. Therefore, I had no way of knowing that you were familiar with this body of knowledge.

You posted what I took to be a question, and I posted a summary of what information I had developed on the topic. It was developed by testing, and it is correct. I thought I was being helpful. I thought I could help your grandson avoid some of the shivers and blue lips that I, and my outdoors orientated friends, have endured wearing hand knit items.

You could keep it as a backup machine.

I know, but it shouldn't be necessary. Perhaps the hard drive ...

I wasn't around here six years ago :-)

...

It wasn't expressed asa a question.

He has intelligent parents who care about his welfare and wouldn't allow that. Also, in Britain we have other garments to protect against cold and wet, we're not 100% dependent on knitwear.

I did. In the morning we went to buy parts for a sizzling new computer for me, Spouse is building it as I type. Then we went to an impressive garden centre which I didn't know about and had a nice stroll round there, I came back with a daphne to remind me of the day. In the afternoon I continued knitting the little lad's sweater and in the evening Spouse took me out for a meal at the only restaurant we're prepared to re-visit, it's so good. I indulged myself.

The diet starts today - I have to be able to get back in my wedding dress, sprayed gold, for our 50th wedding anniversary which is coming up :-)

Thank you!
