Doctor, will I be able to play the violin?

So, the orthopedist congratulated me on having torn not one but two ligaments in my wrist, and he's especially impressed that it took more than a year for the damage to become bothersome enough to me that I went to see him about it.

On the positive side there's not enough bone displacement to warrant surgery. This is a good thing as it means I have a chance of retaining good (not 100%, but good) mobility in my wrist for at least several more years. This is a REALLY REALLY good thing, since surgery involves fusing two or three bones together at the base of the hand which will result in loss of motion :P

The downside is I have to wear the splint full-time except for bathing for the next three months to keep the wrist immobile and give the ligaments a chance to heal. The current KiPs can all be put on hold except for a pre-paid commission item that is due before Christmas. I've switched to throwing and I'm doing my best to match gauge; this isn't critical since the item is a lace shawl that'll be blocked severely but I'm sure *I'll* be able to see the difference.

So, that's me right now. I guess I'll be catching up on a lot of reading...

Wooly, good to hear that you won't be needing surgery. And if the splint bothers you, you can go sit in the bathtub !

Hi Wooly,

That is great news about no surgery. You'll get used to the splint, but I do know it's no fun to have to wear all the time. Been there done that and still have to wear one during the night as it's amazing how much we move our fingers and wrist while sleeping. Ask me I know as my thumb triggered around two this morning and woke me from a sound sleep as the pain is one you don't forget.

Hugs,

Nora

Wooly, as soon as you finish that pre-paid commission item, stock up on books to read. I found out a few years ago that when they put you in a splint to keep the wrist immobile, they don't want your thumb to move, either. In my case, the splint was supposed to be 2 weeks for tendonitis. Wrist still bothered me after 4 weeks, so back to the doctor. All of a sudden it was told to me that I shouldn't be moving my thumb to type. What amazed me was that they KNEW I used a keyboard most the time at work, but never said I shouldn't type or use my thumb while typing(they did tell me that it was fine to wash dishes, since the warm water would be beneficial). The upshot was that I was wearing the splint for another 3 to 4 weeks or so(might have been more, I can't remember that far back with great accuracy).

I would kind think the same would apply to torn ligaments, as well, minus the dishwashing. Hope you recover fully.

Wooly, it is great that you won't need surgery! It's a shame that your knitting has to be put on hold for a while, but as you said, you can catch up on reading.

I hope your splint won't bother you too much. The one I wear is actually quite comfortable, but gets VERY hot in the summer... so because of that, I'm glad that the heat of summer is past so I don't have to keep taking my splint off to cool my hand and wrist.

Take care! Gemini

Ow. See what happens when you don't complain?

My brother had a broken wrist *bone*, which they said might not ever heal, but I don't remember anything about ligaments. He wore a plaster cast for several months, during which he loaded motorcycles onto trucks, etc. Fortunately the bone healed fine.

Here's hoping your ligaments heal as well.

So, should we start a book recommendations thread? Lots of good yarns out there ;-) but tastes vary, so let us know what kind of books you'd like to know about.

Glad to hear that you don't need surgery. I totally understand about wearing the splint as I am still wearing my brace and it is frustrating. All I can say is where it so that the ligaments heal and you will be back to normal in no time.

I am also getting all my books ready for after the surgery when i won't be allowed to do anything for a while.

Take it easy working on the pre-paid commission and don't over do it.

Take care
