Ophelia, are you SURE you are home??? I read in our newspaper that Ohelia makes the people along the South coast of USA afraid! They says that the authorities is watching over Ophelia, and that she is growing!
WELL this is REALLY noting I should laugh about, orcanies are tragic and scaring! I HOPE Ophelia is not too hard when she reach the coast! AUD
Ophelia, way to go on all fronts. Good for you that you crossed the t s and dotted the I s..... I am sure that it is great to be home and that you will heal much better in your own place. Keep on smiling and thinking happy thoughts. Do go to your physiotherapist, It is most important that you do not let that laps. I have a friend who had the same operation done, in July and she is doing very well, but she told me she would never have been walking as fast as she did, without the help of the physiotherapist. Big Hug

Jan hospitals can indeed be very dangerous places, sad that you lost your brother that way.

I have been praying THAT Ophelia dies off. I was told yesterday that she is getting weaker, please let it happen!

I saw my physician last night and he indicated that all our care with the antiseptic wipes was not such a good idea:( sigh.. what else can a body do???
He said that this is how all the problems with infections began, over use of antibiotics:(
love
OI don't understand that at all. Cleaning (i.e. the use of antiseptic wipes) is not the same as use of antibiotics: the one aims to keep the environment free of bugs and the other aims to eliminate said bugs from the body and can lead to drug resistance.
BTW welcome back, glad to hear that all's well so far, and you took pretty much the same precautions for your aftercare (can't do much while unconscious in theatre except trust that the staff want to avoid infection) as I did after my hip op (sounds like a form of geriatric dance!) It was "Don't come near me unless you've washed your hands and are wearing a brand new pair of rubber gloves." Easier to do if in a private room than in a general ward I'd think, but absolutely vital in the current situation.
Keep up the exercises, and hopefully the post op pain will fade away leaving you with 2 wonderful "new" knees

Thanks Christine I feel better about that now. I have a question while I have your attention. The hospital gave me enough dressings for another two days ie I run out on Saturday. The District Nurse will be in on Monday am to take out the staples. Will it be ok to leave uncovered after Saturday? I seem to remember last time, when she came to remove the staples it wasn't covered. We are still using Skinsure... dunno if you have heard of it.
and you took pretty
LOL
It was
Yep. I did similar as well and constantly washing my room and bathroom with antiseptic wipes.
Thank you very much Christine:)))))

Hi there O, you caught me today on my day off, with the washing machine and tumble dryer chugging (constant heavy drizzle:-( at least means it'll be sorted today!) because on Saturday I'm hoping to go to the cinema in Brixton for the knitters showing (lights on so you can see your knitting!) of Pride and Prejudice. So it's wash now or no clean clothes!
I would think that leaving the dressing off your knee would be OK unless you're planning mucky activities, like mud wrestling or swimming in dirty sea water. The alternative would be to send DH to the pharmacy to purchase a spare dressing, and then see what the DN says about dressings on Monday.
Yes, I've heard of Skinsure, which sounds like a great product. I've not come across it personally, but before and after my surgery I did use a tea tree skin wash and shampoo I got from our local pharmacy. I think tea tree is worth a try and as a natural product shouldn't cause any problems except possibly allergy, which fortunately isn't a problem for me.
The other thing I was glad about was that my wound was closed with a sub cuticular suture so no open wound to let infection in. I've got a nice neat almost invisible scar now, and no having stitches out. I actually thin that staple are a good too, because they don't enter the skin quite so far. (I quite like taking them out too, at least you can see where they are and when they're all out!!) I'm sure the experience on Monday will be a good one, and then it's all improvement from then on

Christine, I don't know exactly what the word "antiseptic" implies but, here in the U.S., you can get soaps, etc with "antibacterials." Even though these products are all over the place, "they" (whoever they are) now say that these antibacterials will lead to the same problems that overuse of antibiotics has, i.e. the development of "superbugs" which have higher and higher levels of resistance. So perhaps that is what O's doctor was concerned about?

It will be worth in when Saturday comes:))
That is what I was hoping you would say:)
The alternative would be to send DH to the pharmacy to purchase
Never heard of that one:) Still.. I won't be wearing mini skirts I don't think:)
I actually thin that
Thanks Christine:)

I have heard of the problems with over use of antibacterial wipes etc. Perhaps antiseptic is different?
Oh dear I am getting all discombomulated again:(
Oh no, I didn't mean to discomboble you! I really have no idea what antiseptic means. Hopefully just "clean"!
LauraJ (PS I think we are being hit with the remnants of Ophelia - lots of rain, thunder and lightening about 5 minutes ago but she's quieting down for the moment).
Oh dear... well I am still praying for her to disappear!!
>I agree that the use of antibacterial soap, wipes, washing up liquid and cleaning fluids will have a long term effect, but I think it's more likely to be on the immune systems of children who are never exposed to infection and are therefore unable to build up an immunity to any infection. This ultra cleanliness is being put forward as a reason for the increase in the incidence of asthma and other such conditions. I think that the use of wipes etc in Ophelia's case was a reasonable and sensible reaction to her experience with her last operation
Love Christine
sweet Ophelia, we learn something everyday, and your learning is two fold, maybe it is not such a good thing to use antibacterial soaps and whipes, however you are also doing the best you can, and taking care of your health. So we learn from our mistakes, but good for you that you took charce. Well done. You are home and going forward on a brand new knee. Keep on going and knitting

Thank you so much dear Els! As you say, I am doing my best:)

I agree though it is very strange that her doctor got so upset by it. If it was really bad I would have guessed that the hospital staff would have said something.
LauraJ
I think the theory is that since it's impossible to keep any environment completely free of bugs, the use of antiseptics kills off the weaker ones and allows the stronger ones to survive. And the stronger ones are those you least want around you.
Eimear
Oh he didn't get upset... just mentioned it in passing
