If she's old enough to lay claim to sock yarn, she's old enough to learn to knit her own socks. Children of five and six were knitting socks for sale in the 18th century. Tell her you'll knit one pair but if she wants the other yarn, she'll have to knit it herself. ;-)

There's at least one woman knitting an afghan out of _leftover_ sock yarn. (The leftovers from one pair of socks, her style, will make one five-inch square.) You could crochet an afghan, or a spring cardigan.

I've crocheted all sorts of fun things with sock yarn. Hair bands and scrunchies, little treasure bags and purses for my daughters, socks, baby hats. You can also use self-patterning sock yarn to add accents to pieces crocheted mainly out of other wool yarns -- try sock yarn to make pockets and button bands on cardigans, for example.
We don't have AC Moore here, and that's probably a good thing. I keep reading about all the good sales there and it's starting to make me twitch. We have Michael's (not so much for sales) and Hobby Lobby (lots of sales on yarns I can't envisioning using). My LYS doesn't really have sales to speak of, but I'll throw money at them anyway.

I have knit baby socks before but not adult size socks. Weird thoughts about the thickness of the sock have held me back. Noreen, I don't think that we need an excuse to get together - just some time. Let me know if you are coming this way or if there are interesting festivals your way that I really should not miss. I know some of the others here answered your question, and I couldn't have since I've never crocheted with self patterning yarn - only made socks and gloves with it (knitting). I've turned the heel on the second sock, and was even able to match up the colours/patterns. Luckily I didn't have to pull out much of the yarn from the second ball.

I realize you posted this 5 days ago and it's taken me this long to reply - but I don't think I've done a white mohair shawl - I've done a grey one and a pink one.... I'll have to go back to the albums and have a look..... maybe I'm losing my mind (laugh). ;>D
